I like the smith machine.

I use the smith when I dont have a spot. I have been working out since I joined the marines. I like the smith machine because I dont have to worry about balance I can just concentrate on an explosive lift. Is this bad? Am I uneducated? Should I stop using it? Will I get better gains with free weights?
Thanks for any advice.

The answer to all your questions is YES!

Do a search in this forum about the smith machine and you'll find more then enough info about why it's garbage.

I think you should go where all the real lifters go, and that is the free weights. Notice that only the untrained men and women that need the personal trainers to do absoluley everything are the ones that primarily use the smith machine. It is garbage! stay away unless you have no other choice.

I seem to never see the hardcore guys or gals use this machine at any cost. Just the ones not really serious about gaining anything from working out.

My opinion only.

Do you have a rack? If so use that. Smith is good for pullups thats about it.

you can do a good ab exercise using the smith... you put the bar up high and then hold it and hang. now raise your legs up so that you can turn upside down by folding your legs on the bar. now your hanging upside down and can raise your torso to do crunches... getting into position is pretty tricky if you've got a plate tied to a belt around your waist though. :artist:

at my gym, i always see linemen loading up like 6-7 plates a side and not even doing quarter squats using the smith machine. anybody ever heard of this for football training? or should i have posted this under the morons at the gym thread?

I've never heard of that. If they are attempting quarter squats, they'd still be better off with free weights for the same reasons as stated above.

I don't like the Smith but if there's no one in the gym, I have no choice. Not a big deal.

Why do you have no choice? As long as you have a power rack or squat rack you shouldn't need a spotter for any movements.

Football training (and hockey boys) especially for HS kids can often be confused with special ed gym class. Those husky kids loading way too much weight on the smith and doing 1/4 reps are just doing the only thing they know. Try not to stare at them, it's not their fault.

That tiny, untrained man Dante (DC) likes the smith, so do I - for incline and decline pressing it's great unless it's one of those fruity angled 'biomechanically correct' smith machines. They suck

and the point of that exercise is.....

who pissed in your cheerios?

or...

is your monthly bill coming?

put your guns away - dullboy likes close grip flat bench on the Smith and there's nothing that you can say or do to stop him. *laughs*

no seriously...what is your grip width? less than 12 inches?

i've always been curious by the super close bench grip people, elbows flared and wrists cocked, who do nothing but wreck the tendons in their wrists and biomechanically work against themselves. the main goal is usually to eek out a slight bit more tricep involvement....which you then lose by taking out stability by using the smith machine.

just a thought...

8 - 12 inch grip sounds about right.

you'd really get pissed if you saw dullboy do it with a reverse grip.

dullboy is 38 years old, and has zero issues with tendonitis.

i know that you probably have exponentially more knowledge about training than i do, but if you saw me you wouldn't think i was doing too bad for myself.

thats not that bad, actually if it doesnt bother your wrists. ouch! just read...reverse grip!

whatever you do, don't jerk the weight when they are bent so much. I've wrecked my wrists with lesser angles.

side note: We have this guy out this way who literally touches his hands together. wrists just look like they are screaming to break. his reasoning "hits the tri's more". many have deemed him a lost cause....but his I.L.S doesn't help.

It's mostly mental - I can't squat heavy without a spotter around, even if he doesn't do anything. It's more of a safety net than anything else. So if no one is around, I'll just the Smith or squat light in the rack.

thats what you should do even with a spotter is set the pins where just below your bottom position so you can get out under any lift.

you wouldnt expect a spotter to be able to power shrug something off you if your shoulder gave out, or something tore...right? same thing with squats, if you buckle or lose balance, can a spotter save you under 300+ lbs?

once you get that mindset, you'll see what an asset the rack is and your confidence to train alone will go up.

this post is good. i never really knew why the smith machine was bad. just knew it was bad!! i started lifting when i was about 15 nothing serious just screwing around a few day a week. like most people that just screw around i was doing alot of chest and bi's. the thing is i always used the smith for chest. now that i'm older and been serious for the laswt couple of years. i'm finding it hard to get my shoulders to catch up. i know now that it's because as a kis i wasn't using my stableizers for chest.
once in a while i still use the smith machine. NEVER AGAIN!!!

as it has been said for squats you dont need a spot if you have the squat rack.

as for the other excercises that you do on the smith machines like bench press(incline/decline) or shoulder presses; you can use dumbells instead of a bar (if you have no spotter) and this way if you can't lift the weight you can still put it down.

Best part of this whole thread is that Dullboy says "Dullboy ...." hahah that is fantastic. The only other person I have know to do that was 100% crazy. This guy was 5'9'' and about 240 and ran 3 miles in the 17's. Plrpower thinks he will speak like this too.
