i feel horrible about it. i work for the Boys & Girls Clubs and if anyone is familiar with the organization you know we teach sportsmanship, fair play, honesty, etc...

well, kids from my club (suburbian kids, not real athletic) were playing an inner city club team in a basketball tournement... i knew, the coach knew, all the parents knew we would lose the game, i have NO PROBLEM losing (we had never won a game in this tournament before)...

anyway, it was 23-2 at halftime... and the mother fucking coach had his kids trapping us... i told him in no uncertain terms that embarrassing a kid is not what the tournament is about and he had to back off... he argued that thats how they played and his starters were not in (yes they were)... anyway, after a few show off moves by his kids in the 2nd half (yes they did do the rolling dribble and one move) one of the kids from my club hammered a kid with the ball... there were 2 seconds left...

i walked over to the coach and told him the reason that happened was because of the score and he had no right coaching in a boys & girls club league... he told me to get out of his face and that set me off... i did not swear, i did not touch him (though i really wanted to)...

i apologized to all my kids and parents, but the other teams parents told me i was a horrible example and a bad sport... i feel awful right now for that but at the same time i would defend what i did as sticking up for my kids...

how wrong was i? and should i resign my position?

i dont believe you were wrong, while you may have lost your temper and probably should have talked to him about sportsman ship, the point was well taken

ya, but doesnt that send the message that "if its ok for me to do it's ok for the kids to do"?

i dont think so,maybe explain to the kids what happened,as I do think sticking up for yourself is a good thing, just explain to them that even adults make mistakes and you could have went about it in a better way

Fair play? Pfft.

Did you instruct your kids to use physical force with the other kids?

If you did, then I think that the instruction was over the line. If you didn't and the kid did it on their own, then I don't see a harm.

If the other parents bitch, then you can always say that you're sorry that they feel that way but sometimes bad things happen.

I think that your example of apologizing was a better lesson in maturity, than the blow-up. Everybody loses their temper at some point. It's knowing how to apologize for it, & make amends, that will be most valuable

WERD

Everyone makes mistakes. But how many can admit to those mistakes and step up to the plate with a public apology?

I'd say you were definitely out of line. Should you resign? That I don't know. He was teaching his kids to play the game, it's not his fault your team sucks. And for you to get in his face implying that your kid hammered his because of the score was very pathetic. We all make mistakes. I hope you realize yours. That's all we can do is learn from them.

Don't resign, just don't do that shit again. You probably boosted the other asshole's ego by getting so pissed at him.

I don't even know you, but all I hope is that you aren't (or don't become) "that parent" -- the one that freaks-out at a kid's sporting event.

I wouldn't resign, but I'd apologize. I know it's frustrating to watch that coach press in the face of a 23-2 lead, but its probably equally frustrating for him to watch 85% of his kids never get a shot at advanced education and/or professional mentoring. It doesn't make things right, but who knows -- this may have been the urban kids' shot at feeling like they had the upper hand over their suburbian counterparts. It doesn't justify anything, but it may be the way they view things.

Now, if you want to be a total JERK, next time bring a sign that reads...

"CRIPS signups behind the school. Start early, kids!"

Then quit.

i've had time to think about this... i've apologized to the kids for how i handled the situation... however, i am not sorry i said something to him... he was not teaching anything, he allowed his kids to do "AND 1" moves and embarrass my kids... i said something to hiim then and would do it again too.. my only regret is i did not do it in private...

and the hard foul was directly related to the score.

maybe i read it too fast but i dont really see what youre beating yourself up about. perhaps you shouldnt ahve got so visibly angry, but the point that frustration may lead to violence in what should have been a good natured, fun game is not a subtle one.

the opposing coach should have called his kids together, shuffled his non starters/bench kids in, and used the game as a training exercise for kids still in development, NOT to boost their egos by humiliating a less gifted (or trained) group.

if it were me, id give him a backhanded apology, where id say that the only thing i was sorry about was doing it in front of the kids. play the white knight card, at least he'll feel a bit guilty ;)

typical eagles fans, acting like a dirtbag. you tell them you're related to bobby knight and tell them to go fuck themselves and drop them hogan style next time.

amen... i am no longer beating myself up about this... the fucking certificate the kids got said "FRIENDSHIP TOURNAMENT"... you do not embarrass a child in a game.

its teh fucking BOYS & GIRLS CLUB... fair play, sportsmanship, honesty!!!!

and may i add, the team we played has a membership of over 1200 kids from the inner city, where we are a 250 kid program from the suburbs... with 4 girls on the co-ed team and they had a team of all boys.. how the fuck is that co-ed???

funniest shit about this is my wife runs that club, she was there and will not let that guy coach any more... he told her at halftime "this is how i run my team".

i should have stuck my foot in his chubby black ass.

As a Kid in the boys and girls club, and also a counslor, I would say that your heart was in the right place. Next time there is a game, talk to the coach before hand so you work out "gentleman rules". Also, your volunteering, and that is great! Don't loose hope. Just learn from your past mistakes.

You should resign, what kind of idiot loses his temper at a kid's sporting event for fuckssake, no justification for it

I worked for the boys and girls club and I know that its hard to keep your temper in check, eek trust me, but you did bad by losing your temper but you openly apologised to the parents and kids about it. You were a man about it
Ive also coached ayso soccer and we had a thing called the 5 point rule
If you are winning by more than 5 goals, you back off, dont make the other team feel worthless and that they arent doing good. Your out there to win, but your also out there for them to have fun
We played a neighboring team one year and the other team was notorious for rubbing it in. They were kicking our boys butts and running and doing somersaults on the field. IMO that was just an intimidation tactic. Our boys were afraid of them. it sucked but they got rid of that coach. Its differnet getting beat, they were better than us, but their sportsmanship sucked

got the phone call today... it's not even a blip against me... i guess being the professional of the year gives me a free pass.

I believe in doing the best you can do. You shouldn't let up just because the other guy sucks. Instead of protecting their fragile little ego's, they need to learn a lesson about defeat. How to accept it and become motivated to become better or do something else.

You should have beheaded him in front of the kids to show them all a lesson. Did you mention that inner city black people are just monkeys so you had a right to be an ass to show the white kids that its ok
