i have question regarding dsl and telephone...

i have Verizon DSL and a Verizon Phone line....I currently do not use my phone line for local calls really at all so I would like to cancel it...

My question is, do i need a regular telephone line for DSL or can i cancel this line and still have dsl just fine...

please lemme know..

you need the telephone line.

does your cable company offer cable internet? it's faster than dsl and you usually get a small discount for coupling basic cable and high speed net.

Cable Internet is not faster than DSL. You are sharing a network with a bunch of other people so your speed depends on how many people are hogging bandwidth.

true, but cable internet is capable of achieving 30 mbps whereas dsl is only capable of 10.

i guess it's all dependent on the # of subscribers online in your area. in my instance, cable has been hell of a lot faster than dsl.

you only need the physical wires going to your house. Regardless of you are running a telephone "line" in them or not... it is all a matter of how the business is setup... in Germany is mandatory to have a base telephone line before they will give you anything else... that is about to change and you can now have only DSL with no telephone line... which makes sense since we are rolling out IPT like there's no tomorrow now...

Think about it, WTF do you need a telephone line if you can have a 6Mbits DSL line? you can have all your voice via that same pipe

Cable CAN be faster than DSL.

As stated, it depends on how many people in your hood are online and also how
the cable company has distributed that load .

DSL is usually always the same speed and on average that speed is slower than Cable.

DSL is usually cheaper than cable for this reason.
