I got a job!!!

I posted a while back that I was being laid off as of May 30th. They gave me plenty of notice, but the market still isn't very good, and I hadn't been getting much response from resumes.

Then last week, I got an e-mail from the VP of HR who had also been laid off, and she had an IT position available at her new company. I let her know I was interested, and had an interview three days later. Just yesterday, I went in for a second interview, and got the phone call today that they were offering me the job! I still have to meet with the CIO on Monday, but the job is pretty much mine.

I'll be a travelling technician, spending anywhere from 50-75% of my time on the road. I've never had a job like this before, so it'll be something different. The nice part is, the offices are in very nice areas, and I'll be staying at very nice hotels when I am on the road.

I'm very excited, even though it's a small step backward for me, the long-term growth opportunities are MUCH greater. Plus, the timing is perfect: I get my last check and severance next week, so it's a very nice windfall.

Thanks again to all of you who posted or PM'd me with positive thoughts and suggestions!

Good for you! By the way Hotel Travel Biz Pussy is the best!

CONGRATS!!!!

I'm glad to hear this. You are a lucky dude. Good luck with the new position.

P.S. I finally got off graveyard shift. We got a new contract signed so I'm working days again. The new contract also gave us the added benefit of a 20% paycut.

cool, good luck with it all! sounds like it could be fun :D

Congrats!! My husband and I are both in IT. The market is so bad now if either of us lost our jobs we would be screwed. It's very scary!

Great job man...

Kentucky, July 19th? :)

B True

Thanks everyone!

gymtime and Corn...hopefully I can send some good luck your way. :)

WizKid, the money's pretty good...not as good as I was getting, but the upside is HUGE compared to my old job.

B...I'm gonna do my level best to be there in July.

Congratulations! I had a job somewhat similar, and can give you some insights.
I flew to the customer site on monday, worked Tues-Fri installing computer software.
Long travel days are legitimately considered work days.
Don't accept having to fly on your own time.
Arrive before sunset. Trying to find a hotel in a strange city, map in one hand, steering wheel in the other, doesn't work after dark.

Look into the hotels offering "executive - stay mon-friday, get the weekend free" packages.
Rental cars work the same way. Get on their "easy registration" programs.
That way I'd get the weekend to explore the area and fly back on Sunday.
Great way to see the country without spending a lot.
Register with the frequent flyer programs of all the major carriers.

Jobs like this are great for visibility in your company, cause you're on the company's front line to the customer.
If you do a good job, they're likely to write thankyou letters to your boss and they get copied to your company president.
Of course the reverse is true if you screw up!

Always call your company local sales rep responsible for the customer account you're visiting.
ALWAYS make sure the salesman knows you're coming to visit their account!!!!!<---IMPORTANT
Make the salesman your friend. He knows the area, the account, the people, and can be great assist.
You piss him off, he can be a real enemy.
Showing up at his account without him knowing is a really easy way to piss him off.

Don't plan on the job being long term.
No matter who you are, or how exciting the job,
living in hotels gets really tired.
Give it, say, 2-3 years max.

I gave it 2-3 months....doesn't work well with a family.

You are right on with the whole salesman crap...they can be your biggest pain in your ass....and they are NEVER afraid to cry up the ladder.

One of the things that was discussed at great length was travel time, and all the associated issues...they do consider it work time, and I'll be flying home on the weekends.

It's a very service-oriented company, so I'm definitely going to make sure I make a good impression and leave everyone happy.

Thanks for the tips!

Spatts and I are going shopping today for more professional clothes...gotta have business attire. :D

Additional travel comments..
Many Hotel chains offer Concierge(sp?) floors to people such
as this that spend a week at a time..
Worth asking for..

Also on the money side.
You hinted that this was a step back. I assume you mean financially.
Think of all the money you are NOT spending on GAS, FOOD, ELECTRIC, etc when you are on the road on their per diem..

Congrats...lucky for me the army business is looking to keep me busy for the next 2.5yrs till I get out of active duty, then it's home to join the faimly company...

Anyone here Got Experience with Govt Contract jobs? just wondering cause my mom and stepdad just started a business dealing with such and seem like they are looking to hire on contract workers to fill contract needs once they win contracts...Right now it's for contracts with NASA but I think they are also getting into Homeland security contracts as well

Well, this has been a harrowing week.

I met with the CIO on Monday and it was probably the roughest interview I've ever had. He asked what I thought were very pointed questions, I felt like he didn't like my answers, and I left there not knowing up from down. Instead of leaving with offer in hand, like I initially thought I was going to, he said I'd get a call back later in the afternoon. I really thought that I wasn't getting the offer after all.

Well, Monday afternoon came and went with no call. Tried to call Tuesday, and couldn't get a hold of anybody. Called again Wednesday, and finally talked to the HR guy. Turns out that the guy I'd be reporting to has been out of the office due to illness, they were trying to nail down all the last-minute details, and they couldn't with him out.

So finally I got the call today, I'm going to pick up my offer letter this afternoon, and I start Monday.

Whew.
