It's very likely that the previous owner reported the phone as lost - - if so, then the ESN # has been locked by the carrier making it unusable. Enjoy your new paperweight.

I found a nice cell phone a few weeks ago at work. No one came to claim it and it was deactivated. Had no problem at all getting it activated. A friend of mine has done the same thing also...
