Did everyone know Sweet Potatoes and Yams are 2 wayyyyyyy different things? Sweet potatoes are well potatoes and Yams are a roots totaly different family as potatoes... I feel stupid now

lol weird thing is, those cans that i alwayssssss buy from the grocery store that says "YAMS" in big letters, say on the bottom of the can "Cut sweet potatoes in syrup" could someone explain????????????????

I know the cans.......and all i can offer is this:

Yam is the common name for some species in the genus Dioscorea (family Dioscoreaceae).These are perennial herbaceous vines cultivated for the consumption of their starchy tubers in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Oceania. There are hundreds of cultivars among the cultivated species.
The sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) has traditionally been referred to as a "yam" in parts of the southern United States and Canada even though it is not part of the Dioscoreaceae family.

we dontvreally get yams in the UK, but yeah, I thought they were the same as well!

When you order Yam Tempura at a japanese restaurant, sometimes you get yam, sometimes sweet potato.. lol.
That's all I really know about them.

I have noticed people use the names interchangeably though. weird.

So sweet potatos are higher in sugars and sodium but have a little more protein.

If these facts are right then I should be getting Yams instead of Sweet Potatos? I always thought Sweet Potatos were the healthier one. Maybe Needto has some insight.

yea i eat yams out of the can when im lazy and dont feel like cutting and cooking up sweet potatoes but always thought they were the same

because you are using them for a carb source they are so similar it realy doesnt matter. but canned are not nearly as good as fresh. canned are over cooked and have no skin. for one the skin holds 100% of the fiber and it also is much higher than the rest of the potato/yam in other nutrients.

Usually I just microwave them and eat.. skin might be a little gross that way.

Yes!!! Did you know that that yum in a can is cooked 4 times before it gets put in your can. Then you cook it one more time in order to eat it. That means the yam is cooked 5 times before you ever get to eat it. How much of its nutritional value do you think stays in tact after all that cooking?


Did you also know that some steroids are made from yams. HEH look that one up.

if your going to mac them i would buy fresh and leave the skin on. only cook as much as you need to for them to get past your taste buds. all foods should only be cooked enough for them to be safe to eat. really it would be best to eat them raw but screw that.
