Hurting my workout?

Apologize in advance for being a noob. Just started 5 months ago so I'm trying to soak everything up but its alot to take in. I've seen great gains and I am really impressed on my progress. I could say its changed my life..Anyways, enough of that.

I use to work out with a friend who knew alot. Now that he works a different shift I am now alone. I have been trying out different exercises and different sets/reps.

Recently I have been doing an exercise like preacher curls with a 35lb dumbbell then drop to a 15-20lb dumbbell and finish it out. I feel the pump wayyyy more on this. I've tried this with a few other exercises also and feel like I make good progress. Sorry I don't know if this is considered a superset or dropset but is this good to do every workout? I enjoy it but is it hurting me in the long run?

Also, is it ok to do 4x8-10 on my workouts instead of say 3x10 like most people do? I like to work as hard as I can while I'm there. No sense in going weak, I'm there to make gains.

BTW, I'm 5'10 and I was 185 of chub when I started. About 5 months later I'm at 160 and look sooooo much better. Still trying to tone up the chest and abs tho.

Any comments will help, tried the search button a few times but didn't get the answer I was really looking for.

Thanks!

I don't have a training partner right now either, so I can't go as heavy as I would like either.

Yes doing higher volume training (more sets and reps) will also build muscle.

That 'go heavy or go home' thing is actually a BBing myth, recent research has found that high volume works just as well, which is great news for people who have had injuries, older people who have joint issues..................

It is good to mix it up, go high volume or do mid volume, higher weight

Isn't bodybuilding GREAT

Dropset is the term. They have one thing is common with every exercise you do: After a while your body adapts to the same routine and progress slows. Then you're expending lots of energy for little result. So there's no hard and fast rules here. Just pay attention to what you do in the gym. When something begins to drag it's time to take a vacation and try a different appoach. They'll be there when you want to go back to them.

I enjoy doing dropsets every few weeks but sometimes ill do them once per week sometimes i wont do them at all until my 3rd or 4th week in. I just try and trick my body because i found when i keep it guessing and dont let it really let it fully adapt i just keep growing :)
