hurt lower back, w/o only upper body?

Hey everybody,

Ok, Friday I was doing deadlifts with 300 for 3 sets of 4 and on the first set I threw my back out deadlifting sumo style, not that the situation is of that much importance, but I absolutely cannot do any lower body work until this heals(save reverse hypers for recovery purposes). So, should I jstu continue to workout utilizing just an upper body split, doing something like Monday:arms, Wednesday:chest, friday:back/shoulders? I typically lift powerlifter style splitting up bench, squat, and dead with assistance exercises, but this pretty much throws that out of whack. So what do you think?

If you threw your back out, I dont know how safe it would be to do upper body either. You may want to just take some time off and heal.

I hurt my back also and only do upper body for now. It is harder to work out with the pain but I would still do it so I don`t lose muscle/weight.
I do Mon Chest/back
Wed shoulders/arms
Fri Chest/back

Mon shoulders/arms
Wed chest/back
Fri Shoulders/arms This wo split allows for more workouts in the same time period and works well for now. I miss deadlifts though. lol

If your back is too jacked to do legs, than its going to be too jacked to do most upper body stuff too. Just don't do anything where your torso isn't supported by something, nothing overhead, and nothing bent over.

Take time off and re-evalutate your deadlift technique. If you threw out your back then something is certainly wrong. . . .jerking the weight, rounding of the back, hips rising to fast. It doesn't make since to train with a potentially serious injury. If you cannot train legs with the injury do not expect to make any gains anywhere throughout your body.

do some active recovery. when I hurt my back a couple of months ago, I couldn't even CURL 30's, let alone workout. rest, stretch, do the motion of the lift without no weight, and rest even more. time will heal it. better to save your back and make it stronger, than to save your size and be at a greater risk to injury.

well, actually my back is doing a lot better since I even posted message. Either i'm a fast healer or it was just a pinched nerve or something. I might be able to actually do some squats by the end of the week, but I kinda threw off my routine tihs week by starting with only arms today, whih felt weird, since I've always trianed like a powerlifter. My form in sumo is not what I would consider bad, but I do lean forward a little more, which probably jsut put more strain on the lower back.

Rus,
Sit back and relax brother. Every now and then it is good to take time off. Whether it is forced or unforced. I would take at least two weeks off and eat like a madman. Stretch and get into a whirlpool. Then stretch again.

It can't hurt to be safe, especially when you have your whole life ahead of you to train and impress yourself. Good luck Rus, be safe man.

Whenever I have an injury like that... (Hurt the middle "lumbar" of my back doing squats in 1997 during a 're-racking' incident) I will always take at least a week off... it won't hurt you, it will probably help you anyway, and you have a chance to evaluate your injury.
