How should you train when off gear?

When off gear I was under the impression that you should decrease the number of sets (say by one for each exercise) and cut out the dop sets and forced reps (but still train heavy and to failure but thats it) Surely nobody can train 100% all the time, when off how can you train as hard as when on? Its not realistic to think you can surely?

You're right, you can't train the same way "off" as you do "on". You may still have the strength to throw up a ton of weight, but you no longer have the ability to rebuild the muscles as you did when you were on. You still need to keep the muscle stimulated, but not destoyed.
When lifting after a cycle, I usually keep the intensity fairly high, but lower the volume.
So instead of doing 3 sets of 8 - 10, I'll do 2 sets of 8. Or some variation of that.

isnt it a recovery issue also?
you will be able to recover quicker while on, so frequency would be down some while off

I agree with apexx... Always keep the intensity but only train a body part once per week and decrease the amount of sets per body part. Also you always want to push pretty heavy weight to keep muscles stimulated so reps between 6-10 is optimal. Keep more focus on rest and diet vs training...Don't worry about trying to grow when off unless you are pretty good at training....Usually after a person goes off and the gains stop, mentally that person is pushed to try and keep gaining which usually results in the opposite due to over training!
