How safe it is??

I live in Europe. Recently a friend of mine went to live in the USA for a 12 month period. He asked me to shipp him some gear, but i'm afraid to do it because i heard that every package is X-rayed.
What is the best way to send the gear to my friend without having any kind of problems? (kind of packing,etc)
