How much potassium per day do most of you guys take? How much is too much and how much is too little? Is it true that too much will make you retain water??

I wouldn't worry about taking in too much potassium bro...it will make you hold water...but I doubt it's something you have to worry about.

Worry about!? Fuck yeah!! I mean..I want potassium for it's benefits. But I sure as hell don't want to hold water. Especially now that it is summer and I am trying to acheive a ripped up look. So how much Potassium so should be taken but not too much that makes me hold water?

i take about 4-600mg a day....and dont notice any water retention...dont know where i stand on the too much threshold

too much pottassium, like too much sodium can cause cramping, edema, etc.

it is much harder to get too much pottassium. too much sodium, given american diet, is quite easy to acheive.

If you are eating 5 to 7 meals a day, I guarantee you are getting more than just 600mg. 1 chicken breast alone will give you that!!

Quote from American Dietetic Association

"The Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science recently issued recommendations for sodium and potassium intake levels, saying healthy adults between 19 and 50 should consume about 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day and 4,700 milligrams of potassium."

Of course it may be a bit different for a bodybuilder!!! I'm pretty damn close to about 4.5g per day on my current diet!!!

its not hard to take too much potassium and if you do you will experience lethargy(tiredness) and will generally feel like shit. You can kill yourself easily this way as too much destroys cell membranes...Do you know what's in those lethal injections they give people to execute them in prison?

hypokalemia is literally unknown in the western world, so would hyperkalemia.

as long there exists a ratio of 1:3 salt:k, you should be dandy :)

truthfully i wouldnt expect anyone to take K supps. no real need, as hypoK isnt exactly common, and then theres the risk of people taking too much and setting off an arrhythmia or worse

:garza:

kbrkbr, the one and only :)

seriously K pills are a joke, there's less than 100mg in a tab usually.

worthless bunk, better to use lo-salt.

There is no storage of potassium in the body and it is easily lost in the processing of foods. Serum potassium does not usually go up with high dietary intake of potassium, so toxicity is not much of a problem in healthy individuals as the adrenal hormone aldosterone stimulates the kidneys to readily excrete any excess of potassium. The negative effects of potassium are not seen when potassium levels are increased through diet only. The Recommended Daily Allowance is 1.9 g to 5.6 g ED. If body potassium requirements are not met through diet, supplementation is essential to good health.
