How much $$ for good car sound system?

OK, I'm looking at cars and the options.

Standard is HU-613 Audio System with Single In-Dash CD, AM/FM Stereo with Full Logic Cassette, Dolby "B" Noise Reduction, 100-Watt Amplifier, Six Speakers.

or for $1200 can get HU-803 AudioMax Audio System with 4-CD In-Dash, AM/FM Digital Tuner, Dolby Pro-Logic® Surround Sound, 11 Premium Speakers, 225-Watt Amplifier.

The kicker is you also have to pay another $1200 for a moonroof and I don't want a moonroof because I never use the one I have.

I'm thinking of just saving the $2400 and getting my own system. How much is a good system? I don't want anything too outlandish like huge speakers or anything, just good quality sound. What are some good brands and prices? Thanks!

a very good, reasonably priced brand is alpine. for price, expect to pay ~$1000.

$2400 to drop on a system....you'll have a much better one than factory.

Factory sound systems are always crap except in high end cars like lexus, mercedes.

You want:
Alpine head unit - 300
Clarion or alpine or pheonix 40-80 watt amp - 200 or so
Boston, Diamond, Infinity Components - 300 to 600
Sub amp - 200-300
Sealed box - 50-100
single 10" or 12" sub 80-150

All prices are reasonable estimates.
