How much does a smyth machine bar weigh?

They are all different. I've seen some that weigh 5-7lbs and some that weight 20. Just look on the card. Why are you using a Smith anyway?

I remember this old shitty assed one in the first gym I ever went to... it weighed about 50lbs... :)

Depends I've seen some with an olympic bar on them, The one at my gym I have no idea, I always guessed 15lbs but now I will check since you guys showed me how.

They should weigh the same as an olympic bar, but as already stated the downward force is less due to the parallel suspension.

Also, you can't really compare the weight with free bar because when you lift on a smith you can push upward and outward against the parallel rails which makes it somewhat easier.

Anyhow, it's good for going heavy solo.

So why does everybody hate the Smith machine? I like to use it because I train alone and don't have to worry about a spotter. I'm well aware that you don't get the same stabilizing muscles in the game but it's a safety thing for me.

I use a Smith machine because there is no squat rack at my gym. It's actually ideal for front squats but few other leg exercises.

I always tabulate my weight assuming the bar is 45#. I'm sure it varies between brands though.

I have never seen a Smith Machine bar that weighed anywhere close to 45 lbs.

-The bar only travels in a fixed plane
-It takes away all stabilizer work

-If you train alone, use the power rack.
