How much do you pay for DSL in US

$39.95/month. Cable's $10 more.

However, rumor is that SBC is going to bump prices to match cable here soon.

what all goes into establishing a dsl connection?

if you want cable, not only do you have to pay the $40 a month fee you have to

either buy or rent a cable modem (purchase $200, rent $20 a month)

pay for installation of wiring ($100) or install it yourself ($30)

buy an ethernet card/NIC ($20)

maybe buy a USB adaptor ($30)

but i get 1.3Mbps top download speed.

$40/mo from Verizon. They were offering a free modem, free installation software if you did it yourself, a free Ethernet card if you needed one, plus a free camera a few months ago. It depends on competition - our local cable company (Comcast) is really pushing cable modems here, so Verizon actually has to put in some effort. Also depends on how much capacity your local phone company has for DSL. I installed it myself - took about an hour, but most of that was figuring out which phone extension cord was bad.

$50 128up and 780 Down. Its well worth it when its running right. The problem now is they underestimated how many people would be getting DSL so they are way behind and the speeds are kind of slow round here right now.
