like how much does it cost the manufacturer to make the computer
then

how much it costs the company to buy it

then

the final cost to the consumer...

these can all be assumptions anyone with business ideas lemme know...

Computer outfits (dell, gateway, etc.) buy components (mobo, cpu, hard drive) from manufacturers. They then assemble, test, and sell. So, there are more levels than you are indicating.

Interestingly, an individual can buy the components himself and build the computer, but oftentimes winds up spending MORE than he would if he had just bought the whole package. This is because of volume discounts.

However, big retailers try and make their computers difficult to upgrade, because that way the customers come back and buy again later.

The other way is because people just get tired of upgrading. Back in college, I upgraded my computer a few times with pieces here and there. I often asked my Dad why didn't he want me to upgrade his. He said: A) because I have money and b) why bother?

Now that I'm older I agree. Sure, it may cost $500 more then upgrading part by part, but the hassle isn't worth it IMHO.
