How much can you calf raise?

I've only done seated, and I've never tried to max it. It is a 5x5 exercise for me, and right now I'm at 165 and nothaving any trouble at all. My calves are probably my best developed muscle.

Also, standing or sitting, I think there is a lot of 'technique' that can make a difference in howmuch weight you are pushing.

i can stack the machine at my local gym for about 30 reps straight. it 300 pounds but then again its a machine.

back when i had access to a standing calf machine i did 440 pounds for sets of 12-15. that was a couple years ago though, i have no idea what i could manage right now. i'm guessing around 500, somewhere along those lines.

The other day I did calf raises on the smith machine, 215 for 20 reps, 3 sets. burned like a mutha. I am sure I could handle more tho.

Standing calf raise, I do 6 sets of 15 reps 350 lbs. I have small ass calf's BTW. I've tried and failed at making them much bigger.

Try this. Do 3 sets of standing calve raises for 15 reps, and 3 sets of seated calve raises for 15 reps. Perform that set 3 times a week. If you do cardio and have access to a beach run on the beach. In the DRY sand, not the wet. Keep pushing the weight up on those calve rasies and DO NOT BOUNCE! Make sure you get maximum stretch on the calve on the bottom of the motion and SQEEZE the weight up. Try a 3-3-1 rep.

I prefer the seated calf raised to the standing ones. I dont need any possible back injuries which the standing ones could potentially have - with heavy weight.

But I can pump out 2-45 plates on the seated ones like 25 times, usually do two sets. I should take my calves a little more seriously and hit em a little harder.

The two excersizes are completely different in what they excersize. The seated calf raises emphasize work on the soleus, which sits under your gastrocnemius. The standing calf raises work the gastrocnemius.

I will agree that I get a good soleus burn when I do seated calf raises, I never thought about how or why standing calf emphasize a certain area.

Either way, I walk up 2 flights of stairs about 20 times a day, and walk about 5-7 miles total - the benefits of living on campus. This has seemed to give me decent development in the calves.

The old gym I used to go to had a standing calf raise with a 550lb stack and I could do that for 2x12. In college we had a donkey calf with a 250lb stack I did that and three people sitting on it for 20 so that was around 700lbs.

Cheers,
Scotsman

I didn't think of running on the beach in the soft sand. I might try that for a little bit and see if it does anything. I've tried 3 sets of seated and 3 sets of standing, doesn't seem to make much of a difference. My form is good BTW. Thanks for the idea strongsmartsexy.

Running in the soft sand keeps your claves constantly adjusting to the changes. Calves and abs are muscles you can work hard 3 days a week. Another thing you might try, but only if you don't need to walk for a few days afterwards is 100s. Try it with bodyweight first though. Do 1 set of 100 reps. Repeat after your calves stop hurting. :)

i've only used those weighted machines twice in my life. i got 16" calves from just doing standing calve raises with bodyweight. just... i love doing calves, you can endure the pain

The nice part about doing seated calf raises for the soleus is that it gives your calf more size. A bit like putting a pad under your calf. Do them until they burn, you'll love the results.
