how many stocks out there?

as I was walking back to my apartment this evening after grabbing a wrap, I was thinking about a few different things. one of the ideas I had is contingent on how many stocks there are in total on all the world markets.
I think I recall that the NYSE is like just over 3000 companies.
but I don't know the others.

anyone know this figure off the top of their head - or better yet, know somewhere I can look it up?

this is related to a neural net thing I was thinking about on the way home and how many computers I would need. I was mentally doing scaling for very large numbers, but then brought it back after rethinking what computation would actually need to be done (very little).

as for actually buying stocks, the only ones that I have interest in are Coke (both the company and the bottling), and Gillette.

also telecom stocks intrigue (sp?) me. they are tanking severely now and everyone claims they are dead. yet only half the population of the world right now has ever used a phone. 3rd world nations move quickly to wireless for a variety of reasons (ease and speed of implemenation and less infrastrcuture requirements, as well as less skilled labor needed throughout the time it is in place).

haha thousands upon thousands. In out country alone there are thousands of companies that nobody has ever heard of that trade. Most of them are otc in the pink sheets. They do not trade on any organized exchange and its hard to get actual prices on them. Im not sure of an actual number if there is one....im sure it changes week by week. With so many thousands of companies otc, im sure there are a few every week that are newly added and some that go bankrupt.
