It was the differences between sidereal time and the movement of the sun, the moon and the planets, that made Copernicus question heliocentric theory. Ancient Greece's notion of sidereal time wasn't near as accurate as that of Copernicus's time an true timepieces weren't invented yet.
 
So it is, in fact, advancing the knowledge of our species that we measure time accurately. Or we'd still think that the Sun moved around the earth in a chariot.

This is in opposition to the notion ascribed by another poster in another thread that the measurement of time can be cast aside due to his perception of its passage.
