They are not only given 3 small rations a day. They are given larger calorie meals then a typical adult needs, and at many prisons seconds are allowed. Prisons are not the horrible places you have in mind. A nutriononist evaulates the meals to ensure that they are healthy according to USDA guidelines. This is a change for some inmates who are used to high fat junk foods. They meet protein needs according to USDA guidelines, and have enough protein to build a good amount of muscle each week. Studies among the general population (not pro bodybuilders) have shown little muscle growth benefits of extremely high protein diets over the typical USDA type prison diet. Meals are favored that are low cost and prisoners seem to enjoy. Inmates get cable TV, can work out, and usually have Internet access.
