How fast do you drive?

sigmund

New member
Over here in the UK - our Motorways have a 70mph limit but it seems most people drive at around 90 - 100mph when the roads are clear. Most cars these days are capable of 140mph + (and I see a few people over-taking me in the fast lane doing at least this)!

Just curious :p

the only factors that govern the speed limit here is the level of traffic and the size of your vehicles engine

I assume we are talking highway for the states, or at least those city areas - used to drive closer to 80/85, but since I got a ticket I have dropped down to around 75/70.

Depends. Some days I chill at the speed limit or just over. There's a stretch of road on my way to school that I hardly ever do less than 15 over on. It's a 2 lane zone about 3 miles long and I can pass a lot of slow people there. I've had 3 of my cars up to 114-115 on that stretch of road (88 Beretta GT, 96 Civic, 03 Civic). I've had my motorcycle up to 145-ish on that stretch many times.

Highways - 10 over almost all the time. If my kids are in the car, I won't do much more than 10 over. If I'm alone and want to make some time, 15-20 over, depending on traffic flow and how many people have already passed me going faster.

smurfy!!!!! ur avatar!! gasp....<sigh>....i speed everywhere all the time...freeway travel @ 80-85mhp and i get my doors blown off....thats in my 05 Toyota...my bike is another story, for another forum.

I used to be a supreme asshole on the road, racking up 18 speeding tickets in less than a year, including a 70 mph in a 20mph school zone(and over 7k in legal fees to keep my lisence.)

I have since bought a much slower car, and dont go over 75-80 on the highways, residential/town driving nothing greater than 5mph over the limit.

Im still an asshole, just not on the road :)

i dont have a car... i take the train to work.. or where ever.. i live in the city .. no need for a car.. but when i drive... anywhere betweem 70- 90 depending on how i feel

I try to blend in with conservative traffic. I get treated like crap by the asshole major speeders and severely dislike them.

btw...it is possible to get a ticket when going exactly 10 over. I was once told they pulled the plug at 11....one rookie got me for 10. Took her 45 minutes to do her business.

I was her first.

Ticket.

Going much slower than traffic may be a safety hazard due to all of the lane changing that this creates.

I've heard the rule of thumb being 7mph over.

Driving back to SD my corolla will hit 100+ but its usually when I am traveling with a vain of fast moving people. Dont let yourself get singled out and usually you'll be fine.

I live in Germany and my office is blisfully 60miles away from my home. So I get to drive the Autobahn everyday, normally while running late...It means that I drive everyday at min 100mph, max 150 mph (I usually cruise at about 130mph).

You get used to it fairly quickly and everytime you go outside of Germany to, say, France for grocery shopping, then you have to drive max 80mph and you feel like you are driving in reverse...

Never got a speeding ticket, since I have not broken any rules.

I normally never drive 5 to 10 over on the highway in my truck because I like saving my ticket getter for the the motorcycles. On my suzuki it is anywhere from 100 to 115 then other times north of 155. On my chopper probably 90 to 100 sometimes 140 when I feel the need for speed.

on the national geographic channel the other week they were airing specials on the autobahn

There's a double-S curve near our state Capitol building that I like to take about about 60-70, although I went through there at about 80 the other day when I felt like I needed to teach a guy on a Harley a lesson. He dusted me off at the stoplight, but by the time I clipped the last apex on that double-S, I was 1/8 mile ahead. That's on city streets, not the expressway. The lesson was "accelleration is nice, but it's wasted if you're afraid of corners."

On our crosstown expressway, there's usually a vein of traffic doing about 80, so I'll either fall in with them, or blip it up to 100-110 to get past them if I'm in the mood.

mine feels sweet at that speed
It's as if "everything" is doing it's appointed task

Haha, no way. I've had this piece of crap Civic CRX up to an indicated 115 a few times, I dunno how much more it's got.

What kind of car do you have?

Tuned Copper S (245bhp)

And PBR, Bro, one thing I am still not used to is once the motorad (bike) season start, those MOFOS will be passing you like you were stopped... Scary to watch a guy do 250+ kph in a bike (160+mph)

im super safety sam in the car, i go the speed limit and thats it...which means 50k in suburbs, 60 on large roads, then whatever is indicated ie 70-100 on highways.

although, when i get into an unlimited speed zone, i will hit 140 in my commodore if my wheel alignment is ok

I always speed, out of habit. I think the speed limit should be taken with a grain of salt, really.

Driving conditions should actually be more of a concern.

Yeah, what he said. I drive 80-90mph on the interstate when possible.

I love route 80. People driving 80+ no problem, it's so refreshing.

Agreed. I believe that I am a better judge of what speed is appropriate, than some legislator or city councilman sitting on his fat ass in a lawmaking session.

How much hp does it have stock? Does it run good at 100+mph?

mine was 163bhp (2004 model). startin in late 2004, they updated to 170bhp

you can allow yourself to get ripped off and buy the Works kit or have all the mods done by a tuner ba a fraction.

The mini is a super-stable car, no problem at all at 250kph (vibration, etc). 100mph for that car is a walk in the park. It really gets fun in the twisties

Cruise at 130mph,whats that about 200 clicks?I'd hate to see if you were in a rush bro.

yep, 130mph is 215kph.

Obviously, traffic permitting you can do this. Sometimes there is an accident and you just have to sit there and wish it was the middle of summer.

There are also areas where there is a speed limit (around junctions or highway exits).

As I mentioned before, you really get used to it fairly quickly. Hell, my wife would drive at 120mph withiut even noticing. It is all relative to how fast the other cars are driving: the faster the people around you drive, the faster you drive too.

For all of you bros who love to speed, I can only recommend you come here and enjoy the experience at least once: Fly to Frankfurt, rent a decent car (say, something with a least 200 bhp) and drive south all the way to switzerland... or all the way to Amsterdam.

Not that I noticed. I had a 330i for 3 years, clocked 165000 kms (~ 100K miles) in that thing in that time and it was like new. Never had any issues, not even rattling sounds or nothing: Oil change every 20.000 kms, inspection every 40.000 and that was it.

German cars are known for quality (and price) so people expect the cars to take a beating. You don't see many non-german cars on the roads here. Not even that many European cars (like Renault, Fiat, etc). What you see here all the time are: Volkswagen, Audi, BMW and Mercedes. You get to see Ford (European models only) and Volvos too.

All those cars are known for high standards and you see it in the resale price. Sure, you can get a Mazda or a Toyota, and will need to sell it for next to nothing.

I have seen Diesel cars with almost 1.000.000 kms and run like new, no smoke.

Besides, the inspection here for cars (every 3 years) is DAMN thorough.

last week of so the discovery channel was running a special on the autobahn
apparently the heirarchy runs like this
Porsche
Benz
BMW
Audi
Volkswagen

pointed out facts such as the autobahn is built on 27 inches of pavement
where as the US interstates have slightly less than half of that
thus there are virtually no pot holes

also too the german licensing standards are considerably more strict
and if I remember correctly it took a special license to use the autobahn

i love that shit!!!!....i like high speeds...i ride with a large group on the weekends (crotch-rocket guys)...they like the tight twisty canyons...i like them because you get to practice finesse with the bike but its alot of work, which is cool. but my favorite is the big open loamy canyons where i get "Air it out"....most of the guys i ride with dont like the big open roads as the speeds are too high...it makes me Hard!!! :p :p if i could ride at a buck 20 all day i would be happy... :supercool

I-95 may be an exception. Heard it was designed to handle tank traffic if an invasion took place.

No Opels???

could be true as I believe Jacksonville would have been the likely invasion site
close to cuba w/o going deeper into florida and risk an invasion getting bottled up by securing a strong line across the relatively narrow peninsula

of course an invader would want to secure a major port pronto

Funny you mention it. There is a german saying: "Jeder Opa, fährt ein Opel" (you have to pronounce Opel with an open "e" vowel, so it sounds like A).

Anyway, as you might already have guessed, it means "Every grandpa drives an Opel"... gives you an impresion of the image the brand has here. They are trying to change it though and have come with a shitload of new models.

You do see them on the street, but still, mostly old models doing 60mph on the right lane. There was a couple of models who turned into tuner cars too.

Nice ride....ever get to let it go?

Traffic permitting you could rag that around the roads here. I'd floor it all the time but I'm wary as none of the Thai drivers have the faintest idea about the rules of the road.
