How do you train?

I know this has probably been asked a million times, but Im always curious about how people train. What certain lifts, methods of training,or other things that you personally swear by?Are there any things that you do,just because you like to do them?

Things that are always constant with my training and can be applied to anybody:
- Basic compound movements
- Periodizing volume and intensity
- Form ahead of numbers
- Sustainable progression

Big compound movements, low-to-mid volume, high frequency.

I'm big into exercises that move my core -- squats, pullups, dips.

Also as a personal trainer I learned some nifty strength training ideas from my cert. Stuff like supersetting maximal work and plyos. I look forward to applying those after I reach my desired body composition.

Training explosively :)

Moving lighter weights fast - rather than going heavy and to the limit all the time.

Periodization
Speed work (have done bench in the past, going to add squat durning next training cycle)

My cycles are usually 10 weeks long in preparation for pling competitions. The last one I complete was Advanced Training Cycle - I. It can be viewed at http://www.rebeccaphelps.com/training.html.

I'm also trying to work in some sprints and plyometrics for my next cycle. If I do a 10 week cycle, it won't begin until August 3. I'm just having fun in the gym until then :)

thats the same exact way i train!! the best way to train!!!

Used to do something similar to oldschool type training, but would repeat whatever body part I thought needed it.
(helped my arms grow great). Usually 5-8 reps 2-3 sets at most.

Trying HST right now because the nerd in me thinks it should work really well because of the scientific info :D.
So far I'm enjoying it. Only 2wks in though, so will update on the HST thread after a while longer.

There is no specific program that I follow.

I like low volume and high intensity. . .I also use techniques and exercises from WSB,

On squats, I cycle my workouts:

1. Heavy - sets of 3
2. Moderate - Box work with a pause
3. Speed work - 10 sets of 2

Or, If I feel that my body is taking abuse:

straight sets - 3 sets of 8 reps on all exercises (nothing to failure) except for calves.

Oh. . .and I forgot one thing. . .I rotate exercises each workout.

Half the body is trained in one 55 minute session.

i train using wsb principals. i also train for strongman, so i get to do a wide varitey of exercises.

probably the exercise i most look forward too is tate presses. also known as elbow out extensions. they are my absolute favorite for triceps. i do them so many different ways. on a decline, flat, incline, standing overhead to the front and back. no exercise i no of helps me better at the lockout.

i also try to do as much compound as possible.(never sit when you could be standing)

always control the weight on the negative and explode on the positive. (except for speed sets.)

and my absolute favorite training principal / method is this: break up the negative positive chain. like box squat. pause bench/ deadlift. rack ohp. anything that starts with a negative, completely stops and relaxes, then you explode back against the positive. to me that builds the best stength.

Read Spatts's sticky on building collosus thighs with the butt blaster and thigh extension machine.

It is better if she can send you the video... You really have to SEE what she is talking about before you can fully understand the snatch.

lower body: Low reps and low volume.

upperbody: Higher volume but still low reps.

for both i rarly use more than a few basic movments.

I'm a thief. I stole stuff from Bill Kazmaier, Ed Coan, Louie Simmons, my training partner, Metal Militia, and several others. I try something, and if it works I keep it and if not I scrap it and try something else.

Right now my new thing is training my sticking points. Never really done that before. Also using some speed work. Both of those things I pretty much stole from WSB, and also my training partner.

Oh, and the bench workout that I did the other day I basically stole from Mike Miller by reading his training journal on Fortified Iron. I did some triples, increasing weight, then I did some singles, still increasing, then I maxed, then I did a down set for 3 reps.

So basically I do Coan Westside Militia training...for now.
