How do you register a .edu domain?

no, unless you are a university or other educational institution, registration of such domains are not available to the general public, i believe you have to validate that you are an actual institution in writting to either internic or another domain holding firm in order to gain one.

Damn. I could always try to fake it, but that's not a good idea... I guess I could use a .info.

BTW, I've never registered a domain name before. Who do you usually use, any recommendations? How much should I expect to pay?

for my customers i generally use register.com since thats the best and most direct way to go for registering
around 35$ for a year

Search "domain name registration" at Google. Lots of options will appear. Some are as low as $8-$10 per year (if you register for more than one year), some are as high as $35 per year. Shop around. But it's pretty easy to set up with a credit card.
