How do u cook Yams?

Ok so i bought some yams but how do i cook them quickly?
are they just like potatoes? can i whack them for 10 minutes in the microwave or what/

cheers!

They are very similar in cooking methods to potatoes, yes, the difference lying in cooking time -- sweet taters take a bit less time I believe (then again, it's been ages since I cooked a white tater, so my memory is rusty). :)

I'd recommend checking on it after 5-6 minutes in the microwave, depending on how fast yours cooks. Just fork it to see if the consistency is right for you. Or you could try nuking it for a couple minutes and finishing up in the oven for 15 or so to crisp the skin. My microwave cooks them up in around 4:30, but it's a little powerhouse and I eat the smaller-sized taters, so they "bake" fast. ;)

Just poke the taters with a fork a few times and depending on how powerful the microwave is, nuke it anywhere from 5-7 minutes. When finished, wrap it up in aluminum foil for about 1-2 minutes and presto! Hot and soft.:p

i cooked mine in the microwave the other day and it turned out fine. it came with this plastic wrap on it, and said to keep the wrap on while cooking. dont know how much that helped, but it worked.

Hmm,

I have some other doubt... How do you know when the sweet potato is ripe??? I mean, I´ve bought a potato a while ago and it was orange on the inside, and sweet and soft, the last time I bought one from the same place, but it was yellow inside not as sweet and also harder.

Is thewre a way to tell when the sweet potato is ready to be eaten = ripe?

I like to cook mine in the oven... cut them in long big stripes, slather them with sdome olive oil and saffron and cumin, and put them in the oven 20 minutes or until done, u can try using peanut butter on top as well :p

u can also boil it!

I usually, cut them in half pour enough water to cover them and microwave for about 8 min. just until they feel soft.

The skin should just pull right off. Then I mix'em w/ a handheld mixer add about 2-3 packs of splenda a lil' cinnamon and a tiny dab :D of fat free sugar free log cabin syrup. :p It taste like dessert

If they are yellow on the inside they are sweet potatoes, if they are orange on the inside they are yams. Or vice versa. Basically, the color difference isn't an indication of ripeness, it's a different potato. However grocery stores interchange the name yam & sweet potato even tho they are 2 diff things.

Sweet pots/yams have a higher water content than potatoes so just watch your cooking time, etc. When you make the "fries" they may not ever get crunchy like regular french fries due to said water content. But I do make them as fries with olive oil & YUM! they are good. Baked with cinnamon, brown suger (sub splenda) and Molly McButter or other butter substitute is also yummy!
