how do those google ads work?

gymrat said:
what's to stop someone from clicking an ad constany to up the click count?
nothing, keep clicking it over and over and the site keeps getting charged $0.25 or $0.40 or however much they bid to have that keyword

really? they don't just count your ip address once?
no (at least I really don't think so), but it's only the "sponsored links" that they get charged for

the ones that show up on the righthand side of the page

you bid a certain amount for a search term

say you have a website selling dog toys

so you bid on the term "dog toys"

say you bid $0.50 per click, and someone else has bid $0.49 per click

so when someone types "dog toys" into google, your site will come up first, and the other guys site will be underneath yours

if they click on your link it charges you $0.50

if someone comes along tomorrow and bids $0.51 for the phrase "dog toys" your site will be listed 2nd then and his will be top on the list.

If you tell it to spend a maximum of $5.00 per day you will get a max of 10 visitors, (50 cents x 10 people = $5.00)

but if nobody clicks your link it won't charge you anything

get it?

i get that part Bill Gates. the part i'm not sure about is if you have the ads on YOUR site. which means, that YOU get money everytime somone who visiits your site clicks the google ad.

Can that someone click the ad as many times as they want?

thanks for the sarcasm
you're talking about Google AdSense I guess, and I'd imagine they have safeguards against fraud like that yeah.

So there is the other guy who 0.51 and gets first
If someone clicks on this other guy site, he'll have to pay .51
But if someone click on your site (which is second on the list) you can't pay 0.50
That doesn't make sense

There must be a rank factor

My understanding is that they do a lot to prevent click fraud. We recently worked on the ads with them and now they are much more relevant and more interesting.

Some Platinum Members, Sponsors, Admins, and Mods, need and want to see the ads, so now we give you an option to turn them on or off. Personally, I surf with them on, because I like to see what Google is going to show related to the thread topics and I like to make sure that our sponsors' ads are getting served correctly.

But, if you don't like them, it is easy to turn them off in your Member Control Panel. <p>To turn ads on or off, click on the dark blue "<a href="http://www.elitefitness.com/forum/usercp.php?" target="_blank">Profile</a>" link at the top of this page and every page. Then in the "Control Panel," select the "<a href="http://www.elitefitness.com/forum/profile.php?do=editoptions" target="_blank">Edit Options</a>" link. At the bottom of that page you will see the Miscellaneous Options section and the On/Off button for Site-wide Advertisements. Here's a shortcut to the "<a href="http://www.elitefitness.com/forum/profile.php?do=editoptions" target="_blank">Edit Options</a>" page. </p> <p>If you like seeing the ads from our sponsors, we hope you will visit their sites too since their support, just like your support and generosity, helps keep EliteFitness.com online. </p>

The company of those dorks made $342,814,000 in the past 3 months.

The dorks own a large percentage a company that is making over a hundred million dollars per month from ads like the ones george spellwin runs.

any more questions?

You're right anthrax, there is a formula. How much you're willing to spend counts as one factor in the display order. But also, the responsiveness of the ad. For example, I bid $1.00 on a key word and Bran bids $.90. But my ad sucks and no one clicks it. Everyone clicks Bran's ad all the time because he is a marketing expert. It would not be unusual for Google to put Bran's ad over mine even though he is paying less. There are other variables too. Google spent months with us helping us get the ads here to be more relevant. I find it fascinating to see what shows up now.

Easy there broly,

You're Plat, you can turn them off, or I'll do it for you if you send me your password.
