I can usually do 20-23 (dead hang). I want to get over 30 though!!! I feel like I'm at a plateau. Any suggestions?

Add weight with a dip belt and the reps will drop down for a while. When you can pop off 20 with a 25 pound plate - you'll hit 30.

how often though? I do pull-ups 3x a week right now. Should I just incorporate that in my back workout? BTW, I do palms inward if that has any relevance.

Do them once per week as the first exercise in your back attack. Afetr a couple of weeks of doing them once per week - the reps will probably jump to 30 simply from the added rest/recovery

That's fuckin ridiculous

I'm saying that's a lot of reps, good shit bro, You really train 3x a week? To improve pull-ups I would suggest a weight belt like Cornholio said. I also would suggest some bicept exercises since these muscle and the one in your forearms are the one that usually fatigue first. But if yours don't then try doing one arm row after your pull-up routine because you can strengthen each arm more by concentrating on them individually. Hope this helps.

youre a sick mofo if you are over 20 and just want to bang out 30 at a PFT to show off. damn you!

hehe.

do sets of 15(roughly). tell yourself you wont leave until you do say..45 or 60 pullups and just pick a rep range then rest, another set then rest. eventually you will be doing higher rep ranges in your sets and your total volume will increase as well. thats one method you could try. i tell my guys that cant do more than 10 that they cant leave until they do 30 reps total. i tell em i dont care if they jump up and barely get out 2, that will be 15 sets of 2 then. hehe. :D

I lift weights 5x a week, and run 5 to 6x a week in the morning. Yeah, I do pull-ups M, W, F after I run. I'm a big boy (235-240..about 10%bf)

Damn Jarheads huh!!! Me showoff..Never...;) I do pyramids to 8 which is like 64 total on Mondays. Usually do 3 max sets on Wednesday, and then will do pyramids again on Friday.

problems with pullups....

i have a relatively strong back and arms (both things i think you would need to do pull ups) and i can only do 8 widegrip behind the neck..... should i try weighted dips or just continue to do them at the reps and try to increase it slowly if i can?

I just flat out SUCK at wide grip pullups. I have a friend that we can both do the same on wide grip pull down with great poform. And yet on wide grip pullups he straps on 75lbs and does 10reps. I can barely do 8 reps WITH NO WEIGHTS! Needless to say i gave up wide grip pullups. lol I know its a great back builder but i'll just stick to wide grippulldowns.

DAMN, you should really add some weight.

I hang 50Ibs and rep out 8 (I weigh 180)

I can't even come close to banging out 30 reps w/o weight
damn u :)

BUCK

i can do 40 plullups in a row....first im suprised that pullups are not a major part of your workout for back...second yes do them 3 times a week for back, add weight 2 out of the three times you do it a week

Are you guys fucking serious?? 20 + reps?? Are you talking about widegrip pullups, or just regular pullups?? If your talking about widegrips, more power to ya. I can only do about 10 on my first set. It pisses me off because I would love to do weighted wide grips, but I really don't think it will be very effective. When I do weighted dips, I can do a lot(130lbs for 10). I guess it's no coincidence that my chest and tri's are my strongest muscles, while my back and bi's are my worst. Especially bi's.

behind the neck????

you dont like your shoulders? or just looking to retire early?:D :p

Now here is a real question for all u pull up people:

I can barely do any reps of pull ups. It is pathetic. What will i have to do bang out ten?

I weigh 255 and if i could do it than i will feel like a million bucks.

I am pathetic

Well see there you go, for me 180+50IB = 230

without adding any weight you already need a stronger back than me even when I add 50IBs.

I would have problems banding out reps if I were too hang 75 from me instead of 50

I know i know...maybe it is my build but no excuses. I wanna be strong pound per pound. Efficient...i am tired of being big and strong going with my size. I want to be above that. I want to be like those small dudes in the gym who push up 325 except i want to be that strong at 255.....that's my vision.

I also had problems in the pull up department. then I did my anatomical homework and found out exerscises like wide grip pull downs and pull ups do NOT build a powerful back.

I started doing pull ups with neutral grip (palms facing eachother) as it is easier for the shoulder, with hands slightly wider than my shoulders and logged marked improvements in strength.

Also, re-read BigNate´s quip. Well said.

do some negatives a the end of your set.

after you pass 25 and fail.....

have a freind push up on your feet or the small of your back to lift you up to the top position...then have hem let go, and descend as slowly as you can using your own muscles power.

do this for 4 reps or so

Thanx for all the suggestions and feedback....gonna start adding weighted pull-ups to my routine.

Omega-I will try the negatives...Thanx.

your welcome.

negtives are awsome.

when I used to bench alot, that is one of the only ways for me to break through platues effectively.

Go as wide as you can with PALMS OUT---super slow hitting the top of your chest on the bar and tell me how many you get:)

Yeah, I do those too...but not when it counts for score ya know!!!

BTW: I did weighted pull-ups followed by negatives.....DAMN I felt that shit.....

Buck, I was like you. My pull ups topped out at 20 for the longest time. I was training back twice a week. Then I dropped down to one day a week. I would bust out two sets with no weight... then 3-4 more hanging weight for 6 reps. I saw my numbers go up steadily till I hit 27 reps on my first set. (Didn't think of shooting for 30.) After that I switched routines.

P.S. Art Zeller, the famous bodybuilding photographer, could do a pull up with 200 lbs hanging from his dip belt.

I have just started doing pull ups...
I can't do one. I want to be able to do 10 by August. It is embarrasing and it is going to change.
