How do I go about buying my first handgun?

The Almighty

My parents have been calling and bugging me to figure out what I want for Christmas, so after realizing that once I get my degree I am going to enter a line of work that requires a gun, I figure ask for one. :)

Ok, I know how to use a gun and all, but what I am completely gnorant of is how to go about buying one. Do I just attempt to purchase one in a store and wait for them to do the background check? How long will it take? Sorry I know these probably seem like stupid questions to those in the know but as I said I am ignorant when it comes to this.

When you go into the store they will have you fill out the paper work and send it off to have the check done. It usually takes a couple hours. Most places you just fill it out and come back.

That's for here in SC.

Go to the store and pick out the one you want. Some states have an instant check that only takes a few minutes and some have waiting periods. Either way it is relatively easy. May I suggest a Glock in .40 S&W. Very easy gun to shoot and conceal. If you have big dollars then get an HK or Sig Sauer.

Go to a store that sells the (preferably one dedicated to selling them - not some mega chain store) and ask waht you need to do. It can vary. You may have to register to posess a firearm in your state before YOU can buy one, which can take some time to process.

What job are you going to be doing? What kind of gun are you looking into. How and how often will it be used?

I was looking into buying a glock, probably a 22 or 23. I am planning on going into federal law enforcement in a few years and this is the issue many of them use.

I live in Seattle, but I am going back home to Hawaii for Christmas, and this is when I was planning on purchasing the gun.

I am mainly going to use it for recreation...teaching myself how to shoot, mainly with my left hand since in law enforcement you have to be a good shooter with both hands.

Thanks again for the quick replies.

If you're going for the FBI then the Glock 22, 23 is exactly what they have if I'm correct. The .40S&W is the second best for one shot stop bullet. Around 95% if I'm correct. Only surpassed by the .357 magnum (97%) according to ,"Handgun Stopping Power"The Definitive Study. I personally have one Glock 32 .357 sig. Very nice pistol. Their safe-action system might look weird at first but I like it. You may also consider the SIG P-229. Another nice weapon. But both are around 700$....

if im correct i believe that hawaii is similar to CA in its handgun laws, and if so you better hurry your ass up and get one before the first of the year. You will need to go into a gun store, and take what they call the BFSC wich is the basic firearms safety cert. its a simple test that you will pass with ease if you are old enough to walk.. after that you will have to fill out the forms and they will run a background check on you as you shop around. after that you pay for the gun, wait your 10 days and you go to pick it up..

Now if you want a suggestion buy a SIG SAUER P226 in .40 s&w or an Hk usp .40 ... Do yourself a favor and dont waste yours or your parents money on a Glock, dont get me wrong , they are nice guns and i own one in every caliber , but compared to a SIG or an Hk there is absolutely no comparison.... You can also purchase an aftermarket barrel for the Sig P226 and convert it to 9mm if you want to shoot a 9mm and with the .40 P226 you can also shoot .357 sig rounds. And your high cap pre ban magazines in 9mm can be used for the .40 rounds as well....... (in other words its the best gun you can buy, and is used bye the navy seals and also green berets)

If your going to go with the glock 22 or 23, make sure you get one of the versions WITHOUT a fluted barell. The 23 is smaller so it may make a better carry gun.

Do not try to teach yourself mainly with your weak hand. Master the sucker with your strong hand first, then gradualy make a practice of weak hand drills.

If you really want to become great with your weapon, I suggest that in addition to an adequate service arm, you get yourself a .22 caliber handgun as well. The bulk of your practice can be with the 22. (Your going to go broke if you buy enough .40 ammo to learn with.)

I see people are suggesting Sigs, which are very nice guns. The HK is nice too. However, for a service auto, you really will not find much advantage with these two over the Glock in my opinion. Everyone has the more optimal gun for themself, but being a newbie you just have to dig in.

These are reasons it makes a good toy, not the undisputed king of pistols.

I wanna thank you guys again for the replies.

I went shopping around...and with that in mind I have one more question.

Considering the price of the glocks and sigs, what do you suggest is the best gun for your buck considering I am not the most experienced shooter in the world. My parents are gonna front me $250...I can make up the rest no matter what the cost, but the less the better obviously.

Comparing the Glock 23 and the Sig P-229, I would chose the first since it costs around 200$ less and also weigh 7-8 ounces too. Glocks are reliable and easy to use. The handle is nice and I like the safety system.

Best gun for the money? Ruger P89 or 90 series. These guns get no credit. Cost around $300ish new. You can get lots of neat aftermarket shit for them. I have one and have put thousands of rounds through it withou a single jam! Bill Ruger got with Kalashnikov to work on his auto loader designs. Check them out.

If i was spending no limit? HK or SIG

Hey Manny, i got a catalog that is selling HK G3's for $300!!! I might buy one. What do you think?

Ruger are heavy, but that's just me complaining.

H&K G/ for 300$ ? Hell go for it !Weighs almost 10 lbs (that's just 3 lbs more than a MP5) if I'm correct but the recoil is decent for a .300 NATO caliber. Also the accuracy is tremendous Is it a semi-auto or fully auto ?

There are several ways of answering that question. Being that you are not experienced, a glock could be great because there is nothin to them. They are easy to shoot and maintain. The reliability is unparalleled.

On the other hand, the P226 SIG is no weak piece. It has a bit more of a traditional setup, which can be a positive for a beginner. SIGs seen to point very well and I find them fun to shoot.

The thing with guns is, especially the more experience you have, you really have to pick them up and shoot them a while before you know what's just right for you.

Makes sense Silent...I have shot a few glocks before and they were definately the nicest guns I have ever fired.
Oh well now lets not go there! :D If you want to talk nicest guns I'd have to dump the Glock completely! ;)

I know what your saying though. Their beauty lies in their symplisity.

LOL forgive me. My horizons as far as weapons are concerned are not as broad as yours.:p

Manny, the Ruger is definitely not a concealed carry piece! I like the Ruger cause my hands are too big for the Glocks. The handle on the Glocks dig into my thumb knuckle.

The G3 is semi-auto, but it is a .308 and sweet looking. Never shot one though. My new boss has his FFL so he can buy guns at dealer price!!!!!!!!

Almighty, get the Taurus Raging Bull in .454 Casull! Show up to the academy with that thing and you can blow doors off the hinges!

Almighty, if you like the Glock, you might want to consider the Walther P99 in either 9mm or .40. I recommend you handle one and compare it's ergonomics, etc with Glock's. I know people who have changed their minds about their favorite plastic guns.

MP5: I don't know about buying a brand new Ruger. I have problems supporting companies that have sold out gun owners for political correctness (in Bill Ruger's case, "An honest man only needs 10 rounds"). Maybe buy a used one. I saw in a different gun thread how you were pissed off that S&W sold out to Clinton/Gore and though you might want to try a search for Bill Ruger's own little agenda. (Even though I think he passed away a couple months ago)
