How can you tell when fish are going through the mating process?

what type of fish..... most African Cichlids chase each other in small circles and the female bites the male on the anal fin so she can fertilze the eggs she is holding in her mouth..

Uh, ........ew! I just have some cheapo Rainbow Guppies over here, and they've been acting really strange today. I was just wonderin' if they were havin' sex or somethin'. I have NO IDEA if they are female and male............I know with fish the males are usually the more colorful, prettier ones...........but these are both colorful guppies!
