honey?

ESQ

New member
a guy in the gym today told me he uses honey in his post workout along with some whey. do any of you use honey and if so how much?

Honey is a form of Sugar.
Sugar is Simple Carbohydrate.
You need some Simple Carbohydrate post workout as well as some Complex Carb(Oatmeal for me) and Protein to replenish...

No benefit if it's Honey unless you like it IMO...

I use honey and it's not a question of random choice. Honey has been shown in studies to be the perfect post workout carb due to it's long lasting blood sugar spike. Most simple sugars will spike blood sugar for the first hour and then it will go back down rather quickly. Honey has been shown to keep blood sugar spiked for up to 2 hours. Normally the long lasting spike isn't wanted, however post workout it is exactly what we want as it will promote anabolism and amino acid shuttling for a longer amount of time.

I have been using honey as my post workout shake for the last couple weeks so I don't have any long term results, but the studies look promising. I will be using it as the transport for my creatine next week as well.

Just get the same amount in carbs as usual. Each tablespoon of honey has 17g of carbs if I'm not mistaken. Personally I'm dieting so I only use 2 tbsp along with about 45g protein. However I'd guess you don't have to get all of your post workout carbs as honey to see the benefit. Maybe get 2-3 tbsp of honey along with your normal carb choice adding up to whatever total carb amount you want.

i'm wondering if 2Tblsps will give you the insulin spike you're looking for? Right now i use Dextrose 80g with WPC 40g. But that's just a quick spike, unlike the honey. Is the purpose of a 2 hour spike so you could eat again within the next 2 hours after the shake??

Would 1tblsp((or would 2tbsp be better) of Honey in Oatmeal be a good choice for postwork out? Even if you workout is late at night. I know i have heard numerous times that post-workout carbs can not be stored as fat. But this still worries me.

Thanks

The reason it is said that post workout carbs cannot be stored as fat is because the body will preferentially store glycogen before it begins to convert to fat stores. Thus after a workout when you've burned a significant amount of muscle glycogen, all of the carbs you ingest post workout will first fill these stores before doing anything else. This is why you are supposed to eat within an hour after your workout while the "window" is still open. Along with refilling glycogen the large insulin spike will shuttle amino acids into the muscles. This phenomenon is why the carbup works on CKD diets without adding fat. You can actually eat more than maintenance calories during this period as they will be stored within the muscle for later use.

The reason honey is supposed to be good is that it extends this blood sugar spike for a longer time which means you'll be shuttling amino acids for twice as long. Most sugars, however high on the GI list they are, will raise blood sugar levels very quickly but only for a very short time and then it plummets downwards. This is the typical post carb lethargy some people experience. Complex carbs don't boost blood sugar levels as high, though it is sustained for a longer period of time so you never get that energy crash. Honey seems to be able to perform both. It spikes blood sugar and it keeps it there for 2 hours. A perfect scenario for a post workout meal.

I think 2 tbsp is plenty to experience the boost and then you can have whatever carbs you want with it whether it be oatmeal, corn flakes, potatoes, etc..

For those worried about fat gain; don't. I am dieting now and I am losing fat as fast as usual while still enjoying this post workout spike. Again if you're worried about it just use less honey. For those that can't put on muscle, take 5 tbsp and go for it.

Very informative. Sounds good, thanks.
