Student Arrested After Pilot Uniform Found

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A university student from Egypt was ordered held without bond after prosecutors said they found a pilot's uniform, chart of Memphis International Airport and a DVD titled "How an Airline Captain Should Look and Act" in his apartment.

The FBI is investigating whether Mahmoud Maawad, 29, had any connection to terrorists. He is awaiting trial on charges of wire fraud and fraudulent use of a Social Security number.

Maawad, who is in the United States illegally, told the judge during a hearing Thursday that he is studying science and economics at the University of Memphis.

"My school is everything. I stay in this country for seven years; I stay for the school," he said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Steve Parker said Thursday that the airport-related items were found during a Sept. 9 search.

"The specific facts and circumstances are scary," Parker said.

U.S. Magistrate Judge S. Thomas Anderson ruled that Maawad be held without bond.

"It is hard for the court to understand why he has a large concentration of those (aviation) items, and nothing else to indicate Mr. Maawad plans to stay in the community," Anderson said.

Maawad had ordered $3,000 in aviation materials, including DVDs titled "Ups and Downs of Takeoffs and Landings," "Airplane Talk," "Mental Math for Pilots" and "Mastering GPS Flying," FBI agent Thad Gulczynski testified.

The company reported Maawad to authorities when he didn't pay for $2,500 of merchandise it had delivered, Gulczynski said.

What company will send you $2,5000 worth of merchandise after you "promise" to pay them. What -- he has a vendor's permit and was able to sweet-talk to them to send it to him for free on an IOU?

Or ... you think someone at the company saw all that ordered -- saw a muslim name attached to it -- and made some phone calls. And some bored feds at some office got all excited and started breakin' down doors as a result.

Talk about racial profiling at it's worst. Sure they got lucky -- but it easily could've been a us citizen with a muslim name they found. All that sitting in your house isn't illegal. If your'e a us citizen, you can keep that at home and it's perfectly legal.

Except of course if you're a middle eastern male. Since he's illegal -- he's gonna be locked up for 2-3 yeras now w/o even a trial. Justice in America.

What should happen is they should dismember him and send him back to Jordan piece by piece as a show of things to come when we catch these bitches. Unfortunately some greedy American lawyer will probably get him off with some loop-hole and he'll be free to plan out whatever he is here to do. But that's the good old American justice system!

If racial profiling is used to catch terrorists -- the foundations which make this equal for all country have truly fallen.

The "end justifies the means" logic usually gets used here. That's fine. That's like saying let's pull over ALL black male drivers because last week we did that, and we caught 3 murder suspects and 2 pedophiles. See -- we never would've caught them w/o racial profiling so conclusion : It works!

Instead of all -- why don't we tackel the bigger issue of illegal immigration? If he wasn't allowed to waltz in and stay like those 20 million others -- we might not have had to deal with him in the *first* place. Of course that's a subject that's politically incorrect to touch. Better to wait til he "orders" stuff and THEN catch him.
