HMB question

cliff notes:

has a long history, goes tru phases of being called a wonder supplement and garbage on the boards lol.

the most recent studies, which suppossedly were also the best designed and contyrolled have shown decreased catabolism when dieting, and increased muscle mass when sufficient calories consumed.

its included as part of a supp called "Juven" by EAS that is actually reccomended by docs and AIDS groups to AIDS patients to help improve strength and fight wasting (its hmb, arginine, and glutamine if I recall)

for me the best evidence is that its a refined metabolite of l-Leucine, which has ALOT of new studies demonstrating positive protein synthesis benefits, especially in over 30's (but for everyone). Leucine is the basis of the supp Leukic by muscletech. if you read their ad claims, some of that is lifted directly from study results. very impressive.

I use it, and I'm a skeptic

Based on my research, it appears to one of only a few supplements, outside of aas, that actually can improve strength and mass.

For example:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11448573
http://www.geocities.com/hotsprings/spa/9971/hmb.html
http://www.hmb.org/publications/publication_categories.cfm?PublicationCategoryID=5

All suggest that supplementation with HMB may both prevent muscle breakdown as well as accelerate tissue repair after exercise. The last link actually looks at studies over the years, with links to the abstracts, if you want to get all scientific.

Naw, I think it's just abused. Based on the studies in this link ( http://www.nutritionandmetabolism.com/content/pdf/1743-7075-5-1.pdf ), 3 grams daily was the most efficient amount, while 6 grams showed no improvement over 3.

Most HMB sold today is in 750mg capsules, so four / day should suffice. 90 capsules for $20 - $25... not bad. Especially considering that outside of aas, HMB and creatine are about the only supplements with actual scientific support that they work.
