Hit the Meat Section!

Most supermarkets have reduced prices on higher end cuts of meat that wasn't sold for Christmas/New Year's. I picked up a well trimmed rack of lamb for $7 and saw good prices on other expensive cuts. Remember, you can always freeze the stuff. Why not expand beyond chicken breasts?!?

lamb is quite a fat cut
wild boar, ostrich and bison are delicious & lean meat

Bison looks and tastes like beef with less fat !

I love ostrich - it tastes like beef but it is as lean as chicken. If you have a fudruckers around you they have ostrich burgers on the menu for a leaner option and are delicious (just remember to ask them not to butter the bun.)

This was a very well trimmed (frenched) cut of a rack of lamb. I basically consume no carbs, so this isn't that bad a choice for me. People think pork is off limits too, but pork tenderloin can have less fat than a boneless, skinless chicken breast.

I took this from the dakotalamb website:

Meat Calories Total Fat Saturated Fat Cholesterol
Lamb
(leg roast) 160 7g 2g 76mg
Pork
(fresh ham) 179 8g 3g 80mg
Beef
(round) 164 7g 2g 69mg
Chicken
(dark meat) 174 8g 2g 79mg
Chicken
(light meat) 147 4g 1g 72mg

It looks like leg of lamb is pretty comparable to round steak of beef. Granted, I had rack, but lamb doesn't have as much marbling as beef, so you can trim the outside fat.

It feels so good to catch a sale in the meat section since we spend so much. I go for just about any type of meat while I'm bulking.
