I work for a small company and we are in the process of hiring new employees. We have had two older, retired employees (retired from armed services); one we let go for a legal problem he caused and the other we are cutting loose soon because he just will not follow this company's procedures. He seems to be stuck in his ways and unwilling to change. Does anyone else run into this with hiring older/retired persons? I am hesitant to hire anyone else older/retired for this reason and I dont want to seem discriminating. In the line of business that I am in, we have the need for mature experienced individuals but they need to be flexible enough to learn and follow new company procedures. Also, I am younger than the employees (I have a hand in whether or not they get hired in the first place), and most older people seem to take offense at having a younger person being in charge, so to speak.
Why is it so hard to find good, hard-working people these days?

I guess the thing I would like to point out is, it really depends on the person you hire! I have a lot of employees and it seems the older ones are harder to accept change but they are very mature and dependable and mine, so far, have been very loyal. Younger employees don't seem to stick around for any length of time because they are always progressing to achieve higher pay and position. The thing that bugs me is that you pay a lot of maney training these younger people and in a year or two they are gone. It's and endless viscious cycle.
The second part of your question about finding hard-working people....I believe they do not exist, at least in my area! LOL! I read about unemployment and how high it is but there is nobody to choose from in the pool! It seems at times, all I do is hire/fire, hire/fire, hire/fire. I guess I am bound to come across a decent one every now and then. Good luck!
