Any thoughts on replacing a cardio workout a week with hiking?

I live near some nice trails (mountainous) and have a good climate to hike in. I went out this weekend for 90 minuters and got a great leg workout while doing it! It seemed like a good way to get a long workout in. Thinking about trying it once a week or so.... Thoughts?

I think it's a great idea. Be sure to bring plenty of water. (But I'm sure you know that.)

My boyfriend & I took our dog hiking w/us not too long ago, and it kicked all 3 of our butts. It's great for conditioning, it's low impact, and you get the benefit of being outdoors. Sounds like a good combo to me.

Thanks guys, I figured it would be a good idea (and a nice escape from the gym).

Any other suggestions for gear to bring? Like one of those waste pouches that hold a water bottle? Not to easy to scale rocky terrain holding a water bottle.... Anything else?

Bring sunscreen. Maybe instead of a water bottle, try a Camel Bak. They are so phat. It's basically a backpack, filled w/drinking water, with a drinking hose attached to it. The hose has a one-way valve on the end. Check out www.camelback.com.

Why not a low tech solution like a small backpack with one or two water bottles .. I'm sure you can hold the bottle for a moment when standing still, can't you? :)

I do it all the time, take all your old water bottles, refill them with water, but leave 3 inches from being completely full...put in the freezer and then when you're ready to go, put them in a back pack....they stay cold for a long time, and should you get a cut, a bump or scrape...ya got something to ice it down with.....always worked for me....

Ha ha ha. :D Don't be so sure....I am blonde.....

Yeah, I was thinking the backpack route too, then I can keep other stuff in there too. Since it is smart to wear layers, I could throw a long sleeve shirt in there, things like that.

Also like the frozen water too, I do that anyway in the summer here (the desert gets HOT). Makes sense to do it when hikinbg too.

Thanks for all the thoughts!

Hiking and Snoshoeing are my main forms of cardio. I refuse to do cardio on a machine!!!!!!

Course I do get to snoshow right out my front door. Have been climbing steep hills and what a w/o that is.

Hey anytime you can get outside, Do It!-valerie
