high/low reps on deadlift?

I have been doing deadlifts for a long time and my deadlift is currently at 405. I turn 17 in a month so this is good for my age. My question is regarding rep ranges for the deadlift. my maxout is at 405 but i cant do 2 reps until i drop the pounds to below 325. In fact, in order to do an 8 rep set of deadlift i might have to be working with around 250 pounds. I was wondering if anyone else has this problem, having a rep weight that is WAY lower than the maxout weight. As a result of this i never do more than 3 reps on deadlift. I was also wondering what is the best number of reps on deadlift for increased... back size? or strength?
 
Here were my poundages for comparison.
After 2 years of training at about 170 lbs. bodyweight, I was able to do a one rep max with 455. I was doing 405 for 5 reps x 5 sets. I was doing 365 for 8 reps. These reps were strict without dropping or banging the plates on the floor.

Why are you (only) doing 3 rep sets ? IMHO... For overall back size and strength, I would recommend a 5 x 5 or 3 x 5 set / rep scheme or pyramid the sets increasing the weight with each set (10,8,6,3,3) or (10,8,5,5,3) or (10,8,5) or (12,8,5) etc. etc.
The 5 x 5 or 3 x 5 and pyramid sets are two very basic but time tested and proven methods for size and strength.

Also..... Check out the stickies at the top of the training forum for some excellent workouts and set/rep schemes. Don`t worry about having to use 250 lbs. for higher reps at this stage. What is of paramount importance is proper form.
