Diet is what you need to get ripped... While training on HIT it will give you good muscle gains but gains in muscle only alter the amount of calories you burn and need to grow. Diet is key for essential fat loss. But if you are new to weight training then most excercise routines will help you lose fat due to the increase in many hormones in your body.

he is asking about HIIT, not HIT. high intensity interval training.

HIIT is good as a means of burning the hell out of some calories. circuit type training with 70% of 1rm is good too. both burn some serious calories, keep the metabolism spooled up for quite some time after as well.

Diet sets the stage for these to be very effective though. so putting yourself in a calorie deficit will basically start you at zero and then the training can get you deep in the hole (energywise). if your diet is above maintenance, then you have to work just that hard to get to zero then further to get to where its beneficial for bodyfat loss.
