Man, they have to work alot of hours. So I was wondering what does a typical car salesman make? New and Used if you know? And how they are paid would be interesting to. Any car salesmen out there?

depends on the market and how good a salesman you are

No shit!

I would hate being a used car salesman. They do seem to drift a lot from market to market.

I have a couple buddies that are car salesman......actually they are sales managers now but started as salesman..... as salesman they were in the $75 - 100K range and now they are both around $150 - 200K. They don't have weekends any more. And when they started they were always working nights AND weekends.

One of the reasons I didn't go into car sales or real estate was the family time that would be missed because of the hours of these two jobs.

my stepdad owns a small dealership in ohio. there are many factors that come into play.. (ie salesman traits, current promotions, economy, yada yada yada) and his new car sales guys range from $28k a year to $60k a year.. and last year one of our used car guys pulled in $75k...

there's usually a little more money in used.. but that also depends on the dealership and the market.. as well as the competition (ie. other salesmen).

Isn't that a priority that you set for yourself? I mean, if you spend weekends at the dealership, you can make 100K. If you spend Saturdays at home, you might make only 70K. Sounds like a personal choice to me.

Most dealerships require sales people to work evenings and weekends. Your personal choices and priorities aren't really a factor.

I used to sell cars.

If a salesman isn't making at least 40,000 a year, he is in jeapordy of losing his job. A good salesman makes about 75,000 a year but he really must hustle and work at least 60 hours a week.

There was a broker at my old place that used to be a salesman for ray catena which is a large luxury car dealer here in jersey. From what I was told the guy was making over 200,000.00/yr selling cars and wanted to try his salesman skills out on something else. I guess he figured why just take a small portion of a persons money when you can take it all.

I sold cars briefly. I live in Appalachia which is not exactly a wealthy part of the country. A "top" salesman at the dealership I worked at would make about $30k working 60 hours a week. Most made around $20-25K. From what I've read on this thread it must be different in other parts of the country. You really have to be agressive though. I like my office job much better!
