hernia surgery advice

need advice on workout post-surgery.. repairing ventral hernia (just above bellybutton) & Id like to take less than a week off from lifting...

Im sorta screwed cause Ive been training for a figure comp in April & this def may change my plans.

any help would be really appreciated... Thanks :)

My friend had hernia surgery in late November. His was hiatal, though. He went with lighter weight for awhile. I think his doctor told him no more than "X" poundage each week and what he could add back in, so you might check with your doc. It took him a bit longer to add abs and certain leg exercises back into his routine. He is back to normal now at last. Well, as normal as he gets ... :D

The hardest thing for him was to not push himself. He was really bummed that he couldn't get back to normal poundage as soon as he wanted. He was thrilled when I pointed out to him that even if he couldn't "lift" the plates in the free weights due to the weight limits, I or someone else could do that for him. I think that helped him as he was able to do "real" work instead of do everything on the machines.

Keep as appraised. I have a hernia (my doctor called it "cute"!) in my belly button. It has not bothered me, but it is getting larger and I can feel the hard lump going from it and up my abdomen. I will need to get it taken care of eventually.

Good luck to you!

same as mine!! I found the little cute bump in August after doing some very heavy squats-- 200lbs for one rep-- it wasent worth it:(

anyway.. my Dr. said not to go longer than 6 months w/o repairing it or its much more painful & longer recovery... & Im sorta lucky cuase my Dr is the same guy that did Madonna abdominal hernia... YIPPEE!! LOL!

But did your doctor tell you yours was "cute"? lol

You will have to let me know how it goes. I can tell mine is getting larger, but it doesn't bother me. My doctor felt that so long as it was not causing pain or restricting me in any way and so long as it didn't enlarge too much.

I noticed mine when I developed an "outie." I didn't even have one of those when I was pregnant.
