Help with PWO Shake Please.

Ok. I have been using a PWO shake that consists of 2 scoops of whey protein, 2 cups of 1% milk, a banana and a tablespoon of peanut butter. I love this shake. Apparently though, I have been doing it all wrong and need to buy some maltodextrin and/or dextrose (preferably both). Fine. A 50/50 mix of dextrose and maltodextrin sounds great. Apparently I can get them both really cheap, or at least malto, which by itself I am told is just fine, dextrose isn't as important.

The question is, do I just drop the banana and PB and add the malto/dextrose or whichever one I get, or do I drop the milk too? Because i was told to drop the milk as well by someone on one of the boards. So should I mix the whey and carbs in water?? Or juice?

Normally I blend the shake in the blender but if I have to use water now, I dont need the blender right?? This will prolly taste like shit, unless I can use juice or stick with the milk.

Sorry for the q?s but this is important to me. Thanks for the help:)

Yes, you should drop the milk post-workout because casein (the protein in milk) congeals in the stomach and will prevent the fast absorption that is so crucial after a workout.

Juice is no good either because it contains fructose which will blunt the insulin spike - which is the whole point of adding the dextrose and maltodextrin in the first place.

And just a word on board etiquette, nobody likes a nag - so posting two times after the original post saying, "come on ppl" isn't going to make you many friends (you didn't even wait one day for an answer!!). :)

k so water it is....thanks

you can also use lactaid, or any other lactose free milk if you really like the taste of milk in the shake. Banana is going to contain fructose as was stated above and as a result, should be avoided p/wo. The pb isn't really a good one p/wo either due to it's lack of complete amino profile and slow digestion time.

Okay well it's not that bananas are a horrible choice that will completely ruin your progress - it's just that fructose is not an ideal source of carbs at that particular moment. Ideally, you want something that will spike blood sugar (insulin) very quickly (e.g., dextrose/maltodextrin).

what kind of food can i eat to get those results?

since I now know milk isnt the best option, is there anything I can add to the dextrose/maltodextrin and whey shake besides water? Or anything i can add to it to make it taste better?

get a better tasting whey protein and it should taste really good - i use syntrax nectar - apple flavor - its great tasting

well, today I did 8 tablespoons dextrose, 2 scoops whey (vanilla flavoured isolate) and 2 cups water. This was the sickest shit ever. I wanted to puke. I suffered through it, but damn, with all that corn sugar, I felt kind of uneasy, I mean, it felt like I was drinking a bunch of sugar (which i guess I was). The tatse was awful, and when I added a bit of chocolate syrup to add some flavour, it was worse. Tihs was the sweetest, yet most disgusting, thing ever. Any way i can make it taste better? And are you guys sure all this sugar (dextrose) is acceptable, even if its PWO?
Thanks

oh...well I have a few 5lb prolab pro whey coming, a chocolate, a vanilla, and a strawberry.......hopefully those taste better than my current whey

what whey are you using now?
i thought the prolab stuff was awful when i tried it,
my suggestion:
first do you use creatine?
if so the transporters usually use dextrose, and then it flavored, so its not hard to get down
supplement direct used to make a 7lb tub for around $30, it was a cell-tech comparable

I am now using Biox Power Whey Isolate (its canadian I believe). Vanilla flavoured. I am off the creatine for a few weeks but I am going back on soon, its the Champion Nutrition Creatine Extreme.

good deal - i hope it works out for you, keep us posted - i know for myself that i didnt like using a vanilla or chocolate or anything after a while with the dextrose / malto mix - just wastn tasting good enough for that post workout shake so I switched over the nectar and its f'n great tasting, especially with the dex/malto, it doesnt even taste like your gulping down a protein shake more like a nice refreshing juice
