help with post workout nutrition very confused?

ok first please do not recomend protein shake or dex post workout because I do not belive in supplements at all! only real food. as my post-workout meal about 15 min after my workout I consume baked potatoes and pasta (but mostly backed potates because they are so high in gi) as my carbs and chicken or egg whites as my protein after I workout. I was told that my carb intake wasn't enough and I wasn't getting a insulin spike quick enough after my workout to fight catabolism, so I started to drink on serving of oj right after my workout that contained 26 grams of carbs and 20 grams of sugar then I would follow my regular potatos and egg meal.
now I've been told that fruit or fruit juice dosen't replenish muscle cell's but it goes to your liver and then get's converted as fat! so please recomend for me a good post-workout meal to maximize my gains and please don't say whey and dex shake been there done that and only belevie in real food thanks. after all, all the old timers like aronld never used fancy crap supplements like whey shakes or dex thanks

well you would want liquid form of carbs for a quick spike, why not mix sugar in water and drink that down?
or if you like otatoes, get instant mas potatoes and make a drink out of it lol

seriously though, if you're so against supplements then i'd stick with a baked potato and some tuna or chicken, maybe two baked potatoes.

as for old timers not usin supplements, i think you'll find that they did. It jsut dupplements now are a huge business and we're bombarded with hype and literature about them. Whilst not fundamental to gaining or whatever, they do make an important part of an optimum sports diet IMO

also arnold et al had monster genetics ;)

btw here is my diet

meal 1 eggs mostly whites and some yokes like one or two with tomatos red or green pepers, fat free ham, sometimes cheese, and onions, and one bowl of oatmeal

meal 2 chicken cooked with olive oil with a serving of rice usslay regular white I don't see a huge differnce with brown.

meal 3 chicken same as meal 2 with a bowl of oatmeal

meal 4 chicken with rice same as meal 2
workout
meal 5 post workout chicken or eggs with baked potatos

meal 6 ussaly chicken with either rice, beans or lentiles. and a salad or fresh veggies.

meal 7 if it's not to late in the day i'll have fish or chicken with lentils or beans .

meal 8 eggs just like in the morrning no carbs or oatmeal then bed time about one-two hours after meal.

most protein comes from fish, chicken, red meat (maybe twice a week) and eggs

monkey, i must comend you
I myself have been pondering what my results would be like with a suplement free diet, have you ever used supplements?
If so, what do you feel the difference is between your diet then and now.
Your diet looks solid, i personally would mix carbs and fats too often but if it works for u dont fix it :)
What are ur stats?

I have used supplements and I think they are crap and nothing can replace real food. I am very mental with my diet lol! or at least I try to be. I use to drink post workout drinks they sell at my gym which had whey, dex, and a ton of other worthless crap, I don't see a huge difiernce to switching over to real food that's why I don't belive in supplements besides it taste like crap and 3.50$ after each workout can add up at the end of the month sure I can go online and find this cheaper, but I rather stick with real nutrition, I'm looking for the best way to recover from my workout as quickly with real food that my whole purpose for this theard is to get better opinoin and differnet idea's for my post-workout nutrition.

oh and also besides cheese I don't eat any dairy I use to use 2% milk in my oatmeal but now I just use water. I also have a ton of fiber in my diet which comes from oatmeal, beans, lentils and lots of veggies. also does any one have any comments on protein from beans I've noticed beans contain a lot of protien for not being meat.

smarties are pure dextrose. do a search, this has been talked about before. you can find how much dextrose is recommended post-workout. i think it's about 75 grams of carbs -

these are regular smarties you buy at the candy store like when you were a kid lol!
any other food contain dextrose?

What I find amusing is that he would eat Sweet Tarts for the dextrose in them, but refuses to take dextrose itself.

Also, if you would add regular granulated sugar to water, why not just buy dextrose to add to water?

And should we assume from your name that you use harder substances or is that just a name for a names sake?

You made a comment that the old timers (Arnold) never used whey or supps. First off, Whey has been around for a long, long time and it was used in protein powders 30 years ago. Its just that recently some marketer had a brilliant idea to make it sound new or special and waalaa.....whey became a MAJOR buzz word. Back in the mid 70`s when I was around 16 years old and first started to lift and buy protein powders, I remember reading the ingredients and seeing whey protein listed and I used to wonder what the hell whey was !!!! I figured it was some kind of vegetable based protein. (I was 16, gimmie a break)
Also.... the old timers used to use powdered milk mixed in with regular or low fat milk to increase their protein intake. Bascially you were getting the nutrition/protein of 2 or 3 glasses of milk but only drinking one glass. Needless to say, it was very cost effective at increasing protein intake. The old timers also used dessicated liver tabs a lot. BIG TIME in fact. Dessicated liver was a VERY popular supp at one time and it was a staple with serious lifters. Dessicated liver is still around. I know Dave Draper offers it on his website. Its made by Beverly International. I`m waiting for the day that some marketer "re-invents" liver tabs and it will be the next big "new" thing. There is nothing new under the sun and that goes for your basic B.B. supps as well................
So yes..... the old timers did use supps :mix:

I am not totaly against supplements if you have pure whey protein it's fine, but have you read the back of supplement lables lately?
it's not just whey or dextrose it's a ton of stuff like food coloring corn starch artifical flavoring and I can go on for while.
also I remeber franco columbo saying he does not recomend whey protein because it's a dead protein what ever that means. all I know is that suplements will never replace real food
