Help with Lat Exercises

Seattleite

Are exercises like chin-ups and lat pulldowns necessary if you already have exercises like barbell and dumbbell rows in your routine? Does the overhead pulling carry a distinct advantage over the latter two, or do your lats get all the work they need from the heavy rowing?

i would say that doing barbell rows and chinups are advantageous to creating a big back. i do chins twice a week: once weighted, and the other pull day i just try to do 50 bodyweight reps. i do heavy bb rows once a week.

I've always had trouble w/ lats. The other day I was bs'ing w/ a dude at the gym who is almost the same size except he has a smaller chest and HUGE lats.

He said that he does 100 pullups (as many sets as it takes), and rows.
4 weeks ago I started w/ 50 pullups, 3 sets of rows, and 3 sets of deads. I have been adding 10 pullups a week until I get to 100 and I'm seeing big gains.

man i wish i could add 10 more pull ups every week.. are u repping 10 then resting? or just goign til broke each set?

no kidding -- if I could add 3 more pullups each week id be pumped... im just trying to get to be able to do it unassisted...

the day that i go for fifty it takes at least 8 sets. i go from a full lockout at bottom and touch my chest to the bar at the top.
