Help needed! How to work around a quad tear :(

Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!

Last night, doing heavy squats, normally do 5 sets. Was in the middle of my 3rd sets. When my right leg ripped and flew out from under me. Quad tear, vastus lateralus. I'm a doc, got the medical covered. I've never had this happen or heard of it commonly. I've had rotator cuff surg, low back problems, and pec tear multiple times. But I have never had this crap.

Question is . . . how do I work around this. Leg presses, light, like 800lbs? Any other ideas? My leg routines have been heavy squatting. What else can I do? Or do I just do upper body for a month, though that would be weird too.

Anyone with quad tear experience, tell me how to work around this . . . Please. I need to try to stay competitive through all this, if possible . . .

suggestions.

You can't do any heavy work using your quads which = no squats, no leg presses, no hack squats, no leg curls etc. You can do calf raises though.

I would focus on upper body hard and pretend you have no legs when you're @ the gym.

Use this time to focus on everything upper while your leg recovers fully. Don't half-ass your rehab, make sure it's all the way back before you start anew.

Hope this helps, bro.

Harsh response div, but probably wise . . .

Bump for quadsweep (who had one . . . ) and others too for their comments.

I'm giving you advice which will save you from further setbacks.

It's on you, doc.

Me......I'd completely forget I had legs and focus upper body, it's the only way to be sure you don't reaggravate the injury.

Peace, doc.

Hey bro the best advice I can give you is to NOT work it out. Let that thing heal. 6 months ago I had a very small tear in my quad. What did I do?? I went and tried leg presses....my first rep I felt the sharpest and possibly the most God awful pain. What made it worse is that I heard it tear a little more...scared the piss out of me. As I always say, to each his own, but that's my two cents. Hope it heals quick and keep us updated!!

crap . . . that's 2 for 2 . . .

but how do I know when I'm ready. Rehab can only give you a rough idea, and they don't deal with bodybuilders every day . . . How long to wait, how to start slow? Maybe leg presses a month from now? Then lights squats? How do I plan to get back into legs. Well, off to do the "Johnny Bravo" workout (i.e. no legs). "Hey momma . . . "

When you can stretch your quads without feeling any pain, tightness, etc........I'd say your rehab is complete and you can start off with some light leg presses and isolated quad exercises. Change your perspective and think of this as a time to kill your upper body without anything lower to worry about. Also, make sure you strengthen your abs to compensate.

Keep it real, Doc.

I agree with Division and Kayko, I would certainly take a lot of time off legs to let it heal. You could be like 90% of the other guys in the gym and just train upper body.

will do

Sad but true. I hope it doesn't take too long. Actually, it's going to change my routine a lot. I couldn't do heavy bent rows for back tonight, because my right leg can't support anything . . . I guess I'm going to hit the isolations and machines this month (rare for me). I'll keep it eighties style!

Damn Maj that really sucks sorry to hear..hope you recover quickly..btw if you a leg training junkie maybe you could do some 1 legged leg presses with your GOOD leg..yeah i know it may throw your symmetry off but it will give you something to focus on when you are able to use both legs..good luck

div the quote I posted shows the prob with giving you more k ....

wnt2bbeast, thx. I was joking with Wend about doing one-leg presses, but I said, "It's bad enough, but ok, to look like Johnny Bravo, but to have one huge leg and one scrawny one is just weird!" :lmao:

You must spread some Karma around before giving it to wnt2bBeast again.

I know that exact feeling..i had knee surgery and was in a soft cast and bed ridden for over a month..when they took the cast off my knee was actually wider than my quad :eek2: this was back in H.S. but i was squatting heavy even then..the only thing i can say is it motivated the hell outta me to get my leg back to its normal size..to be honest its still not back to where i want bit its close!!
