Help in Sarasota, Fl

shadowruler

New member
I just moved to Sarasota Fl. a month ago and am searching for a good gym or training partner interested in powerlifting (obviously). I am currently at the Southside Athletic Club but everyone seems to be concerned with the mirror. My wife actually heard some guy say " whats the use of lifting that much weight" and I was only using 315 on the bench. I really need some help over here. Thanks.

You live in a great powerlifting state. There are a lot of Florida powerlifters here on the board. I live far from Sarasota but there are some good meets coming up. April 27th in Lantana (Palm Beach) www.elitefts.com and the big one in Daytona in June.

I'm in Tampa so i couldn't help you out with gyms. There ae a ton of meets coming up in the near future within an hour or 3 or you. Most of up here are gonna be lifting in June in daytona, it should be fun.

Hey bro, I live 25 miles south of you in Englewood. We got 4-6 guys that train at our gym that do powerlifting. Let me know if you want to meet up with us sometime. One of the guys even lives in sarasota accross the street from the big ford dealer. Send me an email or message.

Thanks for the replys. I visited Huge Iron Gym in Daytona once and was very impressed with their set up. It has the perfect mix for everyone.
I am not at a competetive level right now that is why I need good partners to beat me into shape. I dislocated my knee this past December so my squat sucks.
Tigertat, I will have to get together with your crew at least once a week. I have no clue how to get to Englewood though I have heard it mentioned one million times. Maybe I can get a ride from your bud in Sarasota.
Powerlifting is very popular in some parts of Florida but I just hate the bodybuilding mentality that seems to have poisoned most gyms. I followed along myself and even wore clown pants in the 80's . Well I'm rambling. Anyway Thanks for eveyones help.

welcome shadowruler
huge iron is the place we all do our meets at it kicks
now to help you i grew up(even though my wife says i never grew up at all) in bradenton and there is a kick as gym there that a guy named randy runs. there are some good power lifters there that i used to train with. stump,a guy that trains there, was 212 and squated 875. i saw him do 800 myself at the gym back in 1992. FREAK19 your uncle knows him and used to train with all these guys. i dont know the name of the gym now as it had moved and changed names but its off of 64 or manatee ave same road just 2 names. i will talk to a friend of mine this week who trains there and get the name for you it will only be a short drive for you as it is off the interstate---keep checking the boards

Tapout, whats up? Its funny you mention the name Randy because I saw a place here on U.S. 41 called Randys Fitness but I don't know if it is the same guy you mentioned. I will check it today if I can. Also do you do submission fighting? I was just wondering cause of your screen name.
Tigertat, what lifting program does your crew use? Westside? I try to use westside myself as best as I can in a commercial gym but it sure was alot easier to do when I was lifting at home.

Thats what i'm talkin about freak. HOw many guys do you need for a team and whats the deal with it in comps.

Sup guys, I dont train west side yet but plan to. Yo guys that have been to Huge Iron lifts over the past year or 2 have probly seen my one boy, Kevin Mink. He lifts in the 275's and is usually first or second in the meets over there, big blocky bald mofo! The only problem with my crew is that on is in HS, on primarily lifts at home and the other follows Kevins lead (who thinks he knows it all about lifting). I work in with them but seldom work out with them. The nice thing is that we lift at a YMCA that has everything we need including a platform, good squat rack, and very few people after 7:00. They dont mind the chalk and powder either.

Welcome to the boards, it's too bad that u live 4 hours away or else I'd be able to train with someone else. Either way good luck on ur search man.

tigertat
was kevin mink in daytona on dec 1st cause i was there lifting in the teens and mens 220 open. i cant really remember who was in the 275's. How strong is your HS lifter and what are Kevins numbers and your numbers at. is kevin gonna be there in june cause a bunch of us are going.

sup freak! Kevins lifts I'm not to sure about, but I know he was there late last year. They had actualy anounced him as 275 winner but it was a mistake. His # are around 500 bench, 600+ sq, High 500 DL, the HS kid hasn't done a meet yet but I think he will be weighing in at 150 or so lbs. My lifts suck for my weight. I am 320-330 bench, 455 SQ, 430 DL. I would like to either cut weight and get down to 242's or get my lifts up to par before I compete.

yo shadow
yea i do ju jitsu and have been doing it for 4 and 1/2 years. i am a brown belt. we do mostly brazilian ju jitsu we have a guy from brazil who teaches. we also do swa ju which is chinese ju jitsu which is usually taught in the fight class(which is teus and thurs nights and is for cage fighting-we have a team that fights) it is mostly leg locks we learn 116 by black 2.
we are in lakeland which is only 1 and 1/2 hours drive from you-if you ever want to check out class let me know.

Tapout, there is a jujitsu dojo about 2 miles from where I live in Sarasota I still am not able to train because of my knee. I am unable to kneel or put someone in my gaurd, I guess I should try try wearing a brace like I do to squat.I am curious how you fit lifting in with your martial arts. I always end up cuttting back on one or the other. I can't wait to get back in. I will check your school out sometime.
Tigertat, you guys lift at a ymca? I have never been to a Y that allows me to bring bring chalk or anything like that.

Oh hell yea bro, we get all kinds of roody poo up in there! They have gotten used to us, and we pretty much have the run of the place. Chains and bands would not be a problem either, we just havent gotten any yet.

you are right shadow you have to put one first

if you power lift and do too much jujitsu you will hurt all the time

i have decided weights are more important to me i can be 190 and real good in jujitsu and be tried alot or stay 244 and keep my brown belt and do it 1 x per week for about 2 hours to keep my skills and cause so big dont get tried too often but when i do i still have skill and a surprise for them

we are putting on a grappler tournament april 20 up here submission only and our brazilian is now going to compete i got to go see it
