Heels on 2.5 lb plates while squatting

Bad idea? It feels better but I read somewhere that its murder on the knees.
BTW I've been gone for a week or two (exams)...what happened to the quick reply.

Yep. . places extra stress on the knee. . not a natural movement.

You need to focus on sitting back as far as possible.

The squat is not about knee strength. . its about upper leg and hip power.

I always rest my heels on 2.5lb plates when squating, if not I feel like I'm gonna fall over. Never had a problem doing it (for the last 11 years :)).

I wouldn't recommend it. Your heels should stay tight to the ground. When squatting alot of people move their knees forward and lift their heels...bad idea for the knees. Your knees should stay over your ankles, or as close as you can get them. If you always bring your knees forward, and can't help it...you have some postural strength issue that needs to be addressed.

Like louden said...you should really "sit back" into the bottom position.

You need to stop doing this ASAP. Who knows the cumulative stress you've put on your knees. You must have pretty robust joints to have not been seriously injured yet.

wear oly lifting shoes, the heals are raised and you get arch support.

What's interetsing is all oly lifters squat with heels raised and have pretty healthy knees :)

not neccessarily true. I went through something similar a while back w/ Spatts.

Get some OL shoes and don't worry about it.

I'd have to agree that this is not a good idea. Better shoes and working on ankle flexibility would be my suggestions.

the issue is not so much the stress on your knee, but the fact that wedgin a plate under your foot leave large amounts of pressure on certain spots of your feet, with other spots with essentially no pressure; that is the fact that the pressure is not near uniform is what will cause problems.

Get OL shoes instead......
