usually my heart rate is 80-100 bpm at rest... It always has been, my Dr never said anything about it. I do drink alot of tea, so im sure its always gonna be higher because of the caffine.

But I read a study that said something like, if you have a higher than normal heart rate, and you do cardio, and your HR doesnt go up by much that can be a problem.

I jogged today and before i ran my HR was about 100 bpm, after about 5 min of jogging, it was about 150... I duno if thats good or bad... Do I have a bad heart? Or am I just cardiovascularly out of shape? Or both...

Oh, I had an EKG done a while ago... normal...

If your EKG was normal, I don't think you have a bad heart. Caffeine definitely raises your heart rate, you're right on that. Also, best time to measure your resting heart rate is in the morning after a good sleep, lying on your back immediately after waking up. I'd say you're a little out of shape, but I'm not a cardiologist.

I know that my dad, and his dad also have a higher than normal heart rate...

It could just be how my body works? I just dont want my heart to work harder than it should. Im gonna try to run more often, even if its 5-10 minuets a day.

I really can't give you a straight answer here, but one thing I know: whatever your genetic traits are, you can have a healthier heart by increasing aerobic conditioning. If you're worried about it, just incorporate jogging in your schedule as you said. Consistency is key here.

going from 100 to 150 in 5 minutes sounds like your holding some water and on the shit. it takes me a good ten minutes to get my heart rate there at about 9mph at level 15 on an elliptical. but when on the juice, i'd say it's around 6 or 7 minutes because i think your heart is temporarily hypertrophed changing conditions.
the quicker it goes up, the worse condition your in. the quicker it returns to normal however is a good thing. i've had stress tests, echos, holters, bw. bottom line, when juicing alot, my heart isn't in top condition. and i don't think anyones's is. it could be a BP issue also from the junk. higher bp can cause this to happen. slight chance though that it is genetical and if it is i'd look into doing more cardio to try to correct that.

my average heart rate over 24 hours is less than 50bpm. hehe. sounds fucked up eh.

50bpm? not exactly healthy...

anyways, your hearrate will increase quickly if you are bigger than the average person. the more muscle mass you have that is being used in cardio to move your body, the more blood has to be pumped to feed those muscles oxygen. when i weighed 220 it would take 10 mins to get to 155 bpm, at 240, took around 6 minutes. i wouldnt say it is an unhealthy thing unless you are obese.

well, im not on anything. My BP is fine, 120/70 in the morning, and 130/80 throughout the day. i think thats why the dr wasnt concerned. i just dont want to have a heart attack when im 50.

so, do you think jogging 10-15 mins a day will decrease my overall heart rate at rest?

I think it will.

actually the lower your heart rate is, the more freaky you are. i don't remember exactly, but they talk about lance armstrong having a HR of around 40 or was it 35 i can't remember. but the point is that the lower you are the more endurance you are likely to have.

@ oak: what's your BP like? there isn't necessarily a correlation but i asked out of curiosity. i think there's a better chance you might be cardiovascularly unfit.... so you'd probably have to just work on it. what are your stats (age/ht/wt/bf)?

ah ok i just saw your BP is normal. not much to worry about.

BTW, just thought of this and wanted to throw it out to you guys for discussion. i read one of the triathletes on the cardio forum say that he does lots of slow cardio every day to lower his HR (a good thing for endurance athletes AFAIK)....

lower heartrate is a sign of 2 things, either youre an extreme athlete or you have bradycardia.

Bradycardia is just the medical term for a heart rate below 60, now matter what the cause (brady=slow, cardia=heart). So even those "extreme athletes" have bradycardia, even though it's not a bad thing in their case.

A heart rate of 80-100 is normal which is why your doctor wasn't very concerned about it. 150bpm when doing cardio is also normal. If your blood pressure is good, then the only real problem with having a fast heart rate is that your heart grows because it is working so hard all the time and because of complex physiological reasons it becomes less efficient. That's generally not a problem though if your resting heart rate is 80-100, if it was around the 120 mark then that's about where the trouble starts.

And jogging 10-15 min a day will definitely lower your heart rate.
