Just a reminder to be careful. I had a Priority Mail window envelope arrive yesterday that was very obviously opened at the bottom with a letter opener, and the envelope inside was also opened with a letter opener. The bottom of the Priority Mail envelope was stapled back shut with one staple in the center.

Might not be a big deal, but if freaked me out.

I picked up a package from the post office.. and top seal had been broken it was basically half open. I was like..wtf.

that's what happend when I bought MJ seeds once, no hassel though.

No gear, just dough. I still don't like it. I emailed the individual that sent it jus to double check that he didn't have to open it for some reason before he sent it, and he verified that it went over the counter completely sealed.

communism at its best.

thats bullshit man...america aint what it used to be..

what is the policy of UPS or fed-ex in this area?

or it was randomly opened by someone that wanted to steal something...

THE SKY IS FALLING, THE SKY IS FALLING!!!

Private carriers can open and search at any time for any reason. USPS needs a warrent for anything except express mail. It is not likely that anything would be opened unless the RECIEPIENT is being watched.

My understanding is this is no longer true as of about 2 months ago. I could be mistaken.

You better read the Patriot Act........ However, i still think the incidence of it actually happening is pretty low.

most likely an isolated incident. they would not be so blatant opening and then stapling your package shut. paranoia will fuck with you though the next time you got gear or something coming.

bush a few months ago passed a law that allowed USPS to open any package for anti terrorism reasons.. but i'm sure if they happen upon some gear, they will pop you for it. ACLU is trying to get this law appealed or thrown out...less freedom and less to come in the future.

I hope you're not right. Still what are the chances of them opening my package. :worried:

Who said anything aout someone wanting to steal something? Everything that was supposed to be in the envelope was there. It was cash. Someone, for some reason, wanted to see what it was. That's the part that scares me.

yea that shit is wierd...

I dont think domestic mail can be searched for no reason - I believe it is only international mail coming into the US. I need to research more, but that is what I understood.

there are more stealth ways to get in an envelope and check things out inside than just slicing it open. it almost seems like they wanted you to know they had been looking.

Keep us posted on what information your research yeilds black sheep. Good karma for you.

When shipping a package, the clerk at the USPS, is supposed to ask "Is anything Liquid, Perishable, Flamable, or Hazardous?" If something inside the package is one of those 4 and is opened, the USPS is within their rights, Unfortunately.

I was going to say that I didn't think anyone could open 1st Class Mail w/out a warrent? I don't know if this is 100%... Any mail carriers out there?

Had an international package that was similar to yours. Half the seal was ripped open but contents left alone-didn't even seal it back. No notice or anything. But that was international so who knows. I had a package damaged by USPS once and they put it in a bag with a notice saying sorry it was damaged/opened during shippment.

Paper is flamable. You got a point there juniormints.

The point is that the USPS has the right to search a package if the contents were not truthfully disclosed. They can also search any package and basically label it as a suspicious package or claim the mailer was suspicious. Of course they can also open it for no reason and when asked claim that the package must have been damaged in shipment and if there was damage they can ask you if you paid for insurance, if not SOL.

hey every body I have a question. why not use UPS or FEDex ground. I was a territory rep and my company used to send tons of stuff ( a whole garage full). And they never opened any of it. cost like 10 bucks and takes like 3-5days to get anywhere in the country???

you would think they would be scared to open an envelope full of anthrax.

a lesson needs to be taught here.

fucking government. all in the name of terrorism.

I would reword it and say fucking terrorist. And yes, the terrorist need to be taught a lesson.

your package was opened because it was randomly selected. dogs are trained to sniff for certain explosives, drugs and of course the strong aroma of money. i worked at a place called jetsort when i was fresh out of high-school. there are machines that shoot out small rows of large priority envelopes 50 at a time onto these slotted racks (the row where i worked had 100 rows of these 50deep slotted racks, and there were probably 85 colums of 100x50's in the warehouse )that correspond with whatever area the barcode on the envelope refers to. the dogs are assigned to 10 row sections, and only do one (of the 85) colum at a time. this was in philly where im from. im sure each city, or large town has their own mail sorting facility. one of the most common things found in my place was cash. it has a stronger odor that marijuana on a gram for gram basis. think about it

President Bush's Signing statement on HR 6407, PL 109-435 Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act.

The executive branch shall construe subsection 404(c) of title 39, as enacted by subsection 1010(e) of the Act, which provides for opening of an item of a class of mail otherwise sealed against inspection, in a manner consistent, to the maximum extent permissible, with the need to conduct searches in exigent circumstances, such as to protect human life and safety against hazardous materials, and the need for physical searches specifically authorized by law for foreign intelligence collection.

Signed 20 December 2006

That doesn't say that this is already occuring, but that the President thinks he has the authority to open mail without a warrant under provisions of Title 39 and the Patriot Act.

I don't think that this line-item veto will pass Constitutional muster.

Maybe they are building their case against you. I would lay low indeed. That's often how they get you, after a l e n g t h y investigation.
