No and no.

...and you won't ever.

Remember that when you train.

yes and yes - but I'm assuming you mean at the top olympic level.

there are always genetic freaks, but for the most part - yes, you are right :)

Exactly - top of the line bonafide Athletes.

How do you explain someone like Big Buck? Genetic freak? He's solid and does a lot of running.

Not argueing, just wondering how he does it. My goal is to be large, ripped AND have good cardio abilities.

My point is:

At the olympic/professional level - your body will be representative of the way you have trained it.

Buck is a freak - but if he ran marathons and hundreds of miles at a time he would look VERY different

I do see your point. I just seem to remember that he will run 8 miles or so at a good clip for his training. Pretty damn impressive at his size and representative of my goals.

Damn freaks.

Yep. But even at the level of running he dropped from 265 into the 230's.

Big Buck said:
Well I'm only 240lbs at the moment, and I ran 9 miles yesterday in an hour and 10 minutes.

Good point.

I think 250 at 5% with said miles would be impossible.

Great job freak.

Okay, my interest is sparked. How big are you Big Buck? Everyone seems to know you. I guess I'm kinda' new to this forum. Do you have some pictures or something?

I've also posted that too.....people doing cardio 2 hours a day 6 days a week wondering why they can't grow:confused:

I was only doing 20 minutes a day and still had to stop doing that to get any size.

To Corn

This is probably one of the mpst true statements out there. This is why I have started to add sprints into my routine. I want to look like a muscular sprinter, thick but with great definition and relatively good cardio. I say relative cause they don't do long distance but they have great lung capacity, and cardiac effieciency....

Currently I'm 5'11" and 240lbs. I've been as heavy as 260lbs +. (couldn't lift for awhile cuz some shit went down) The last time I posted pics was like 2 years ago or something. Most people that have been around awhile have seen my pics and know who I am. Plus I've meet a few of the other MODS in person...so they know I'm the real deal. I'm more of an athlete/bodybuilder.

Speaking of the sprinter physique, any of you that are going for that...

What are your routines like?

I'm doing the old school split right now, just getting my form down and will hopefully add a little size too :)

I've never seen Ben Johnson before, what does this guy look like?

Save th esprints for the next program.

BJ was a very muscular sprinter back in the day.

Think Race horse type frontal quads...

I am confused on the whole post corn. But let me see if I understand where you are coming from. Are you saying that if you want to be muscular and cut you should lift heavy and do sprints instead of long periods on the treadmill? Is that what you are saying?

Here...

I read an interview with Charlie Francis (ben johnsons coach) a while back where he said Ben would regularly squat 600 lbs for 6 reps. Dude was one strong mofo...

Although I agree with your interpretation, that is not my main point.

The body will respond to the stimulus you provide.

Marathon runners LOOK the way they due because of the type of exercise they do. Same is true with sprinters.
Sprinters thing explosion.

Marathoners think long burn.

Skinny Sprinter

Antonio Pettigrew... 'nuff said. Awesome quarter miler and used to run the 200, and he is thin as a rail... It doesnt have to do with muscle all the time. I have seen real lean, cut guys, get beat my skinny kids. IN fact the fastest kid in my region is skinny as shit. 47 second 400, 21.8 second 200 and a 10.4 second 100...

But, I am not saying I disagree, if this kid got on a good weight training program and good coaching he would be unreal. You should have said: "Muscular marathon runner or Skinny ONE HUNDRED METER sprinter..." you dont see many skinny 100 meter sprinters in the olympics, but you do see skinny 200 and 400 runners.

I think it is accepted fact that "sprinter" refers to 100 meters.

Sprinting for 100 meters? WoW. That is a long way. Heck...I always try to stay within arm's length from the fridge so I don't have to sprint anywhere...:)

LOL

True my friend - true

I THINK what Cornholio is trying to say is that if you want big legs or muscles...you must train them with strong intensity, not super high reps, and get lots of rest.

I'm constantly being verbally bitch slapped by people at my Gym telling me "Man you are doing wayyy too much cardio"

And yet my lifts are not declining.

I try to tell them I am a relatively easy gainer, I tend to be fat, have a family history of Heart disease and that I love to eat.

Maybe I could be bigger than I am if I didn't do all the cardio but so be it....

Generally speaking Corn you are right, but some of us freaks are happy to be Sweatin to the Oldies...

Ok, I can't take it. How the hell can a sprinter be classified as anything but skinny? Sure, they're fairly muscular. So what? 160lbs is far from being big, unless you're 5'4". They have some muscles, yes, but they sure as fuck aren't big and muscular. Show me a 225lb sprinter and then I'll call them big and muscular.

I'm not trying to be a dick but you can't increase lung capacity. I'm pretty sure you guys didn't exactly mean lung capacity but I just wanted to clarify. Cardiac output is able to be increased and is with aerobic workouts.

We often overlook a few fine points...

Ben Johnson, as well as other sprinters, train for function. When they cross that finish line...they don't care what they look like or how muscular or lean that they are. They just want to be the best sprinter.

A football player doesn't care how good he looks, just that he is the best player on the field.

Strongman competitors...don't care what they look like...they just want to be the best on the field that day.

Training like a sprinter may not make you look like a sprinter. Never forget that most of the people that you see on television or at the Olympics were born and not solely made. Asking Ben Johnson how to get big may be like asking George Halbert how to bench press a lot. They both were successful...but were/are also genetic freaks.

WOW!!

Lots of controversy - let me clarify.

Sprinters look the way they do - ie - muscular as hell because they train explosively.

10 milers look the wasy they do - ie - a teacup full of muscle ob their bodies because they train the body to pare doen it's (muscular) size.

Peroid.

No one has come up with an Elite(olympic) athlete who violates my rough rule of thumb.....

No offense, but it's not your rough rule of thumb. This was known before you stated it.

Well Geewilikers...

I guess that's like saying:

"You are acting like a little bitch"

Not my rule of thumb as it was known before I stated it.....

It's all good. It seems as though you helped some people out with this topic so I can't knock ya for that.

YOU ARE EXACTLY RIGHT. THESE PEOPLE TRAIN FOR FUNCTION NOT FOR LOOK. DISTANCE RUNNERS ACTIVELY TRY TO DECREASE MUSCLE AND FAT TO LEVELS THAT MAKE THEM APPEAR ANOREXIC. IF YOU HAD A DISTANCE RUNNER THAT WEIGHED 220 RUNNING 130 MILES A WEEK HIS KNEES WOULD BE SHOT IN A MATTER OF MONTHS (THAT, OR HE WOULDN'T WEIGH 220 ANYMORE ;))

To whoever said sprinters dont look huge

Watch the 60m, and 100m on TV sometime (It's on every now and then on ESPN). Those dudes are huge, and have a very low BF which makes then look even bigger. Most are probably around 180-210lbs i'd say, but look more like 250.

Look like 250? Please. Sprinters in comparison to distance runners are very very muscular. But compared to a strength athlete they are still very skinny.

A 250 lb man is a big man. To most people. My sometimes training partners are 275 and 300 respectively. Stand an olympic sprinter next to these guys and they look like skinny kids, which they are.

The fastest 250 lber on the planet, who is probably some NFL linebacker, or an Olympic Weightlifter, would not even be in the screen for the finals of an olympic sprinting event. Carl Lewis weighed in at a buck seventy. 170! My son turned 11 today. He holds the national record for his weight and age the best we can tell in the deadlift, and he weighs about 150. At 11 years old.

You guys need to broaden your perspective. Sprinters are not thick. Kenny Patterson is thick. Ronnie Coleman is thick.

However, the original point of this thread is well taken, comparitavely speaking sprinters are much much more muscular than marathoners and the reason for it (other than genetic predisposition, how many white sprinters are there?) is the way they train. If you want to be thicker and more massive, train for it.

B.

Do you think a sprinter cares what he looks like? I highly doubt it... Same as NFL lineman...especially when he gets his check.

Linford Christie

Linford is big enough for most people and lean too :)
