Man I actually do this alot. I can only turn my head if my whole upper body turns with it and it just sucks. I have found a few things that can help besides just time. If you have access to a deep tissue or swedish massage get it for as long as you can afford it and tell her/him to concentrate on your neck. That does WONDERS. A heating pad will help, icy hot, flexaril if you can get any and stay away from caffine. I had a dr tell me once that caffine can help aggrivate muscle tightness and slow the relaxation process. If you are married, beg your wife to find that knot and just dig until you are crying. This stuff always helps me but honestly, it usually takes a week before I can not feel it anymore. Good luck bro, I feel that pain.

Good avice there as well. I guess it would depend on if it is muscle related or a pinched nerve, or something worse. What do you think it is man?
It has happened to me a few times. One of my vertebrae slips a little out of place. When this happens, your muscles tighten around the area to protect it from further damage. It hurts like a bastard for about a day. That is when the muscles seem to start relaxing - then, I crack my own neck. When the muscles relax, getting your bones back into place is a lot easier. But if you want to spend the money, go to a masage therapist. You can do the chiropractic work yourself.

Cold... not hot. Ice pack 20min 3x a day.

two days later and I feel better, yesterday I could barely move. I tried to get a massage but the lady I go too was booked. My GF is useless in these matters.

Only get it with behind the neck presses so i stopped doin them. Other than that exercise i have yet to pinch a nerve or hurt it. With most other exercises you really shouldn't hurt your neck if movement is correct and you can handle the weight. i find that taking a hot shower directly after working out works wonders.

funny you should mention this, i hurt my neck a week ago incline benching. I pulled/ripped a muscle/nerve that runs across the top of my shoulders / traps and I couldn't turn my head to the right/left. Just had to massage it out, take tylenol and wait a week. UGH. It's the worse because it cripples your workouts :p

if this plagues you, start doing neck work. just like any muscle its weak, when you tighten up everything around it, something has gotta give. BTN presses and pulldowns are the worst for this but even moving wrong can throw out your neck. start doing neck extensions, neck flexion and lateral neck flexion. and before its said...no shrugs don't count.

Been there, done that...

I just tough it out..you will feel better in about 2-3 days :)

A heating pad to the back of the neck would help relax those muscles a bit.

Cold... not hot...

Heat brings blood to the area and provides temporary relief. Cold will subside any swelling or inflamation. I always treat the root of an injury, not a side-effect caused by the injury.

Ive done it many many times. I never did anything for it. It usually got better within 4 days or so. I always continued to lift, but trained around it. Sometimes Id use my day or two off for recovery.

I've done that. you need someone with a strong grip to massage it out. If it's what happens to me, there'll be at least one "knot"...usually in one of my traps. Just knead it out...it hurts some, kinda feels like a shot of electricity running through me. It'll feel better. If left alone it'll go away too but it sure does hurt.

Don't let ANYONE make a neck adjustment on you no matter how much he swears he knows what he's doing. Only a chiropractor.

I have had the neck pinch/pulled muscle numerous times, usually from heavy bench. It is deep in the upper traps, and it radiates down to the shoulder blades. Depending on which side it is on, I can only turn my head about 3 inches. (Which makes driving fun.)

I always go first 48 hours ice, then heat therafter. Advil 3x a day can help with the inflammation as well.

I have noticed this usually happens at the beginning of going heavy after a layoff from the heavy weights. It sucks.

I'm posting 9 days after you first posted this steve, but maybe this will help others if not yourself. My oesteopath massaged my neck when I last hurt it which helped a bit, but he reccomended HEAT and not ice! The heat pad 2-3 times a day helped to loosen the TIGHT muscles that I had from heavy deads, and overhaed presses. Pain in the neck is caused by tight muscles and not by inflamation - unless youve got some kind of accute/impact injury.
