Hate my gym...Should I purchase this?

I would do the second one for the fact it comes with a smith machine racked squat bar. The peck deck is useless thoug.

I know ,so is the leg machines imo.

I highly recommend a power rack and bench instead. Modells has 300 pound Olympic sets for $88 as of last weekend. I'm not too far from you, NJ/NY do you wanna buy my power rack? lol I also got a smith machine I wanna get rid of. They're in my gallery. You've seen them before.

OAK..an irish man with a nipple ring.. Why a nipple ring? My ole grilfriend had one, but she was female

how did you know I had a nipple ring?

either way I like it,and think it adds as nice decore for me, I wouldnt get it done again today, but Ive had it for like 4 years and wanted it then, I dont hate it now or anything so I leave it

going to the gym is gay. I would love to have my home gym. The only problem is that my parents wont let me store crap in out basement

I bought one of those multi-gyms when I first finished my basement. It seemed like a great idea. It had a lot more than the one you posted, but I tried it after a long ass time of assembling the thing and it sucked! I bought it back two days later and started my basement gym that I have now.

Seriously, if I could choose one major piece of equipment, it would be the power rack. Do it! lol

I'll leave tomorrow morning and I'll meet you in Buffalo.

For $299 I am going to have to guess that rack is a POS. Putting equipment in your home is great. Just make sure you get some quality equipment (which would rule out the pieces you are looking at.)

PW, if you want a Powertec Power Rack and Bench and willing to pay for postage, let me know...

Anything you buy at Dick's is just not going to be quality. I bet those benches couldn't hold your body weight plus 225lb. If you are on a budget try to look for some used commercial stuff.

why would someone want a Smith Machine ? I get the Safety Cage thing for Benches and Squats but what is it with the Smith Machines?

fuck me, i'd love to have a power rack in my apartment....its all you need - that, and a bench.

i envy gonelifting

When equipping a home gym you have to buy COMMERCIAL QUALITY equipment. The same stuff that goes into your neighborhood gym. You need heavy duty tubing for the power rack and not some knock off that looks like commercial quality.

You will have to pay more though. I would like to point out though that most poeple like 90% go to the gym for the atmosphere. You have to like the atmosphere that puts you in the mood to workout, then everything will take care of itself. I know plenty of people that have full blown gyms in their houses and still have gym memberships because motivation in the house is hard to come by.

Oh so much confusion!
a cage,,,you can STILL drop the bar on yourself, the PEGS of a CAGE are NO guarntee of safety,,, if you miss and the whole bar goes sideways and down, as it did to ME, the whole bar still crashes ON you and/or on the floor, if you have pets or kids, and they happen to be around, they might get hit.

a smith machine , you can NOT drop the bar under any situation, it is FIXED to the rail assembly,,,,,,,,, there are TWO great smith machines at DICKS, one a bit lacking in over all ruggedness and doesn't quite feel like gym quality, but the top of the line SMITH machine at DICKS is excellent for home, and NEAR gym quality,,,,,,, contrary to what someone else said on here, PEC decks are NOT useless

if you could get a smith machine for the same price as a cage, why bother with just a cage? you can get much more daring and liberal with increasing the weight load on a smith machine when you NEVER have to worry about dropping the bar under any situation........ a cage offers NO safety really,,, it's just a big oversized weight bench.........

Thats what I thought.I Couldnt see/imagine any advantage with a smith.

In fact I could see it encouraging overtraining.

it does NOT encourage over training..... that is something anyone can do no matter what their using,,even cynder blocks

and smith machines are NOT for whimps,,,,,, stay in the gym long enough and you'll find some of the HUGE guys using them too,,,,,,, ANYONE can have a accident ,,,,even a PRO bodybuilder, on a basic bench , when bench pressing, shoulders can lock up, cramps, a un expected sneeze, anything can happen no matter HOW seasoned a lifter is,,,,,,,,,,, SMITH = SAFETY especially with NO spotter,,,,,,,,,,

Now one thing I have noticed that you DONT get with a smith that you do with traditional bench,,,,, added benefit of gains made through the effort to keep the free bar stable,,,,,,, that is lost with a smith but a SMALL trade off for the safety

Statisticly speaking, home gyms end up collecting more dust than sweat. Find a better gym. Surely there is somewhere they have decent eye-candy.

Appreciate the help but there was no confusion about the difference between the Two .

I only asked about why people liked Smith machines for a Discussion on the topic.

I personaly dont like them because they make my wrists feel funny (for Benching anyway) .

I dont know why but free Weights dont bother them at all .:whatever:

And with the Cage the saftey Issue isnt a Issue anyhow.

unless your training to Failure It shouldnt be a Huge Problem.

I Dont Think They are for Wimps.Who said that?LOL..

Im working on a budget so Im just looking and Talking Right now.

Thanks Though

I went back and looked and I did call the Smith machine a Cage ..duh.
It was listed under Cages at Dicks WeB page,Oh well.
At least I knew What I meant. :)

NO problem we all make mistakes,,,,,,,

prices seem the same for both smith machines and cages the pain you feel in your wrists is from the twisting action to return the bar to the locked position, free weights and smith machines > the remedy, gloves with wrist support straps.
