hapkido

damachine said:
has anyone ever heard of an art named hapkido if so what do you think of it?

A little bit about Hapkido here.

I have never taken it myself, but I know many schools do a rip-off of the real art, and it turns out to be basically tae kwon do with a few throws or locks thrown in.

That being said, I have heard true Hapkido is an excellent art to practice.

I have taken it for over 2yrs and have a red belt in it. i don't know of any other school in my area that teaches Hapkido. I like it a lot but i appreciate any form of martial arts.

I am going to agree with Mike. My Master has tweaked the original art form into his own style but it is still effective.

I would not consider it a sports art like your TKD, but more of a self-defence art. I am talking arm an leg joint locks, weapon techniques, throw, kick, hit, and nerve pressure techniques. My school is considered a combination martial arts school that combines HKD, Ssirum, Yudo (Korean Judo), Grappling and some Muay Thai.

Bones have been broken so be careful.

what is Yudo like
is it litterally Judo but renamed in Korea or are there rule differences?

as to first question I have heard of Hapkido but never practiced it myself so I can't really be much help there

It is similar to Judo, but more of a self defense nature. so you will find moves that are effective in real-world situations and not with your opponent wearing another Gi.

I trained in Hapkido for 2 years in college. It was intense. Since I left college I have checked out many Hapkido schools and have found them all to be "fake" Hapkido. One even had a hardwood floor!

Anyone in the Atlanta, GA area interested I would look at: http://www.blackknight.com/

My former instructor and his instructor now teach here. There new facility looks very nice.
