Hamstring Injury

Today was my DE squat day. I am working out at a new gym at my school. On my second rep of my first set the carpet, which is cut into squares for some reason, slid out from under my left foot. Before I knew it, I was dumping the bar over my head and I heard and felt a pop in my left hamstring. It hurt like hell and I couldn't even walk out of the gym. I have seen a Doc. already and by looking at it he said the muscle is still attached. He said it's just a tear in the muscle, no surgery is needed. So anyway, I was just wondering if anyone has experience with this kind of thing and if anyone can give me advice. For now I'll just take lots of Ibuprophen, Ice and rest. I have to heal quick, cause my goal is to squat a grand before I turn 24. I have 14 months to do this. Thanks for any input or suggestions.

First I need to upgrade my goals again, you guys are kicking to much ass. Anyways, Lou just popped his hamstring a week or so ago, and I have seen other's including grand squatters do the same. It will bleed out and drain down your leg most likely leaving a blackish/purple bruise to freak you out. Do light hamstring work and take it easy on heavy days. Very light work will aid in recovery, light dragging-even lighter squats maybe-or pulling. Feel it out but don't sit around. A few weeks and you probably can start working your routine back towards normalcy. Light massages and heat/ice should help too.

DBCoooper, thanks a lot for the reply and advice. That's encouraging to hear. When I felt it pop, my initiall thought was that I was going to be a bench specialist from now on. Obvioulsy an over-reaction. It also made me think of a video of Chuck pulling his hammy in the WPO on a deadlift. It's already getting better, I can sort of walk around my apartment now. I'll get back to training as soon as possible. Thanks again.

Damn bro,

Hate to hear this happen. Cant offer any advice(as Ive never had this happed), but I hope all turns out well.

Did you decide against the time off from training you had been contemplating?

Later..

I have pulled both mine this year...basically anything you do that stretches it is going to delay the healing process so don't stretch at all. You want to get as much blood to it as possible w/o stretching it and tearting it again....so that means really light hamstring curls with bands for a lot of reps....I spent a long time dealing with this shit this year and basically you just have to let it heal...there is nothing you can do besides the typical rehab shit...mine both took about 6 weeks to fully heal

VDOP, I'm still taking time off from super intense training. I'm still going in the gym though. I won't give up DE squat days, I'm just doing them without bands for a while. I was only going with 500 today, so it wasn't going to be a hard workout, but the damn carpet slipped.

IL, thanks for the input. 6 weeks isn't too bad. I'll avoid stretching like you said and hit up the band leg curls as soon as possible.

Thanks for the replies guys.

a guy i train with popped his hammy this year 6 weeks before a meet, doing seated good mornings. he was black and blue from his ass to his ankle. he did alot of massage work, and he got some really strong horse rub from the tractor supply store and used that on it. he was fine my the meet, and got a 20 lb pr on squats.

Brute, thanks man.

Liftbig, that is another very encouraging peice of info. Thanks for the input. That is great.

Ice and anti-inflammatories. Typical recovery time is 3-6 weeks. As IL stated, limit stretching and intese contractions. Everything slow and easy. AR is the name of the game.

Update on the injury. Today, I was squatting with just the bar. I think that's awesome considering I couldn't walk 48 hrs. before that. Tomorrow's ME squat day, so I'll do hella reps with the bar and band leg curls. I won't push it too hard, but I want to do what I can.

PLEASE keep us updated with what you are doing daily to rehab the injury...it may help me in the future.

Damn that gym sucks....

DG21, you got alot of good advice. The one suggestion that I will add to this is UNDERWATER RUNNING. Start by running with the water at chest level or whever you can touch...then as it gets better move to more shallow water. It works...or at least it did for me when I popped mine while pitching in high school.

Keep us updated man...

i tore my hamstring Deadlifting 3 year ago (black and blue from ball to ankle). I iced and heated it religiously for about 10 days, i didn't take any anti-inflamatories except at bed time and i kept my foot elevated ( on a pillow ) while i slept ( this really took the swelling down). I was doing range of motion work ( seated leg curls 1 leg at a time within 48 hours ) and icing immediatley after. I also did a great deal of walking on a steep incline to get blood to move through the area. All in all it worked out pretty well, but it took about 1 year to get it back to 100% ( there is still a depression in the back of my leg where the hamstring was detached).

Hannibal, I have access to a pool here at school, so I'll give that a shot. Thanks man.

BigWh1tey, damn that sucks. I like the six week recovery that DBCooper was talking about better than 1 year. Hopefully I'll fall into the 6 week category. I have no depression in my muscle, so that's good. Thanks for the tips.

Last night I was doing wide stance squats with 65lbs. I did about a million reps. I threw in some light band leg curls also. I'll keep this up adding weight slowly and throw in some pool work. I'll keep you guys posted.

Can you Imagine big Dave bobbing through the pool doing underwater running? The average joe might catch that and go running off thinking he's seeing the Loch Ness Monster:D

I tore my hamstring last Saturday playing softball.

This is the second time I tore it, the first time it was over 6 months before it was back to 100%.

I saw an orthopedist and he said we should be able to get me back in action in 3-4 months.

he said to ice after use, heat before stretching and use. Stay off it completely for the first 6-8 weeks. After that start off with extremely light hamstring curls with little or no weight and many reps.

I start physical therapy this week and will go to that for 6-8 weeks.

I play sports 3-4 days a week and work out 3 days a week. This is really hampering my life.

My advice to anyone is DON'T overdo it. Whether it be a lift, or sports, stay under control. I'm 26.. I'm not old, but I'm not a teenager anymore. Injuries I sustain now will take months not days to recover back to 100%.

This Tuesday I was able to deadlift 245 for 3 sets of 15 with no pain. I even did leg curls with my hurt leg. This was with very little weight though. I squatted all the way down pretty quickly with 135 as well. Things seems to be going well. Basically I have been doing light exercises for many reps a few times a day. I think I'll be good as new in a few weeks.

Lestat, how severe was your first injury? Could you walk the next day? How much did it bruise up? I hope you heal up quick.

It's been just a bit over three weeks since I popped my hamstring. Today I was able to do rack pulls from mid shin level, up to 635. Not a lot of weight, but encouraging for me. I stopped because I didn't want to push it too much too soon, especially since I don't have a meet for a while. I felt no discomfort or pain. After that I was doing deep squats and pull throughs. I should be good to go for all out training in a week or so.

GREAT man!!!!! Please keep us updated.
